Agnes b., born in 1941 in Versailles is a well known French fashion designer. She is known for her self-named fashion brand ‘agnes b’. It is surprising that she likes her name written in lower case. Her clothing label got registered in 1973. She has stores around the world and employee strength of over 1,250.

Agnes b. attended Ecole des Beaux Arts in Versailles. She entered into fashion even without her realization when she was spotted by ELLE magazine because of her unique personal style of dressing. At that moment, she was wearing dress from the flea market and from France’s Monoprix – a discount chain. She worked with ELLE magazine as a junior editor. She left ELLE in less than two years. She was studying stylist then but, she felt that if she had to work in fashion, it would be more interesting to make them instead. She worked with several companies until she began to design for herself. This marks the beginning of her splendid journey into the fashion world.

Unlike other modern fashion designers who prefer complex designs and styles, Agnes b. likes her clothes to be clean and simple. Her sense of simplicity and elegant design separates her from other modern fashion designers. In 1975, she opened her first boutique Rue du Jour in Les Hales and in 1983, she opened her first international fashion store on Prince Street in New York’s SoHo district.

Agnes b. launched her line of cosmetics and skincare products Le B Perfume in 1987 and additionally maternity wear, shoes and bags. Her art also includes designing watches and eyewear for Seiko and beauty line for L’Oreal. Agnes b words “Clothes are less important than the person wearing them,” explains her idea of a definitive fashion statement. In her statement she also states,” I don’t like fashion, I like clothes. After all, fashion is all about making a statement. Visit one of her stores and you will find clothes and not just fashion.

Agnes b. has successfully been able to maintain many of the same silhouettes like the long stripped tees, snap cardigans and streamlined suits which she had introduced in the seventies. Her design in distinguished by clear cut, clean, chic, and simple designs that can be worn by any personality and for a long time. Agnes b love for the city of New York has mode infused strong interest in American films and dubbed film noir in France. After helping her friends to complete films like Gaspar Noe in Irreversible and Claire Dennis Trouble Every day, she started to do it herself and she did the company Love Streams. Agnes b. is loved for her passion to design clothes for which she calls real people. Jodie Foster and David Bowie are among the celebrities who wear her clothes. Agnes b. has more than 100 stores around the world. She has stores in London, Amsterdam, New York, Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taipei, new ones coming up in Beijing and Shanghai. Agnes b operates two stores in Manhattan in the United States and the third is ready to be opened in 2011 at 50 Howard Street.
