A highly gifted fashion designer, Aki Narula is famed hor his exuberant and vivacious collections. His love for colors and a variation of texture and drape is reflected in his modest designs that have been endorsed by the well known names of bollywood.
Aki Narula graduated in commerce from the St. Xaviers College, Kolkata and worked as a management trainee at Lintas for ten months. He moved to Arizona State University to pursue a communications course and then after returning back to India took up a Cost Accountancy program. Aki Narula was always fanatic about detailing whether it was apparel or accessories, food or interiors. His input for costume designing for college plays, concerts and Xavotsav was in fact considered invaluable.

Aki Narula always added his distinct touch to clothes that his mom bought for him and eventually he grew into a personal stylist for his friends and family. He started his in house training with a tailor that used to visit his house everyday and convert his sketches to costumes. Aki Narula participated in a costume designing contest organized by Damania Airlines and won the contest rom Kolkata. He was approached by Taj Bengal’s The Khazana store to design a line of men’s Kurta Pyjamas. His first collection sold out in mere two days. He later designed for ‘Ogaan’, Delhi and he quit from his Cost Accountancy program. He then started with a team of three, a master and two tailors and launched his label AKI.
Aki’s first show was with ‘Melange’ that took place at Mumbai at Opera House featuring an all out women wear collection. In a span of one year, AKI began retailing in the biggest stores in India including Ensemble, Melange, Camelot, Ogaan etc and Aki Narula finally moved to New Delhi where he set up his workshop and expanded his team to twenty five members. He received an overwhelming response for his collection showcased at the Lakme India Fashion Week, 2000. Aki Narula started designing for Bollywood films beginning with Monsoon Wedding, Dil Chahta Hai and Dubai Return. He was later approached by Selfridges, London to create designs for their bollywood promotion.

Aki Narula’s designs were featured in the opening sequence of the Miss India Beauty Pageant, 2002 and he was immediately appointed the Design Director at Sheetal Design Studio for which he designs under the label Aki Narula for SDS. His debut collection for Sheetal, ‘Man Unbound’ became a huge success and he was categorized as one of the leading Indian designers with his designs being sold at high end outlets in India as well as abroad like 1 M.G. Road, You Grasshopper, Ensemble, Zingara at Cannes and St. Tropez and SDS.

Aki Narula has designed for a number of Bollywood films like Kyun Ho Gaya Na, Don- the Chase Begins Again, Tashan, Bunty Aur Babli, Garam Masala, Bluff master, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Housefull and a National award winning Bengali film. Aki is also designing for the forthcoming Hindi film Tees Maar Khan. Besides designing costumes, Aki Narula has also worked as a stylist for several fashion shoots and advertising campaigns. He has recently ventured in to designing candle stands and linen.
