Arya is a popular Tamil actor who made his debut in Jeeva’s ‘Ullam Ketkumae’ and later appeared in box office hits like ‘Arinthum Ariyamalum’, ‘Oru Kalluriyin Kathai’ and ‘Pattiyal’. Arya has rececentyle ventured into Telugu films with ‘Varudu’ wherein he plays the negative lead. Arya is a qualified engineer but his passion for acting made him join the south Indian film industry.

Arya was born as Jamshad Cethirakath into a Muslim family on December 11, 1980 in Taliparamba in North Kerala. After completing his schooling from SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School, Chennai, Arya earned an engineering degree from the Crescent Engineering College, Vandalur in Chennai. Arya started working as a computer engineer but soon joined modeling to pursue his acting aspirations.
Arya was noticed by Jeeva who offered him the lead role in ‘Ullam Ketkumae’ released 2005, however his first release was ‘Arinthum Ariyamalum’ directed by Vishnuvardhan. ‘Ullam Ketkumae’ and ‘Arinthum Ariyamalum’ became commercial hits and Arya received the Filmfare Best Male Debut (Tamil) Award. ‘Ullam Ketkumae’ was the debut film of Arya, Asin Thottumkal and Pooja Umashankar and also starred Shaam and Laila Mehdin. The film was originally titled ‘PEPSI-Ullam Ketkume More’ and its release was delayed owing to a lawsuit filed by Pepsi.
‘Arinthum Ariyamalum’ starring Arya, Prakash Raj, Navdeep, Samiksha and Adithya became a surprise hit and was later dubbed into Telugu as ‘Kalisunte’. His next film ‘Oru Kalluriyin Kathai’ was named by Deepam TV as a top 10 film of 2005. Directed by Nandha Periyasamy ‘Oru Kalluriyin Kathai’ starred Arya, Sonia Agarwal, Jaivarma’ Santhanam and Charu Hassan. The film was released in Telugu as ‘College Days’ in the year 2008. Arya later played the lead roles in Igore’s adult themed ‘Kalabha Kadhalan’ opposite Renuka Menon and Saran’s action thriller ‘Vattaram’ alongside Kirat Bhattal, Napoleon and Vasundhara.

Arya shared the screen space with Bharath and Pooja Umashankar in Vishnuvardhan’s blocbuster hit ‘Vishnuvardhan’ released in the year 2006. Based on the life of gangsters, ‘Pattiyal’ is inspired from Karthikeyan Selvakumar’s stage production ‘Dei, Namma Melam Edutha’ and the 1999 release Thai film ‘Bangkok Dangerous’. Arya made a guest appearance in Cheran’s ‘Maya Kannadi’ starring Cheran and Navya Nair and Rajesh’s ‘Siva Manasula Sakthi’ starring Jeeva, Anuya Bhagvath and Santhanam.
Arya played the character of an expert racing auto driver in Pushkar-Gayathri’s ‘Oram-Po’ also starring Pooja and Lal. The film opened to positive reviews and became a success due to its entertaining storyline. Arya received a nomination for the Vijay Award for Best Actor for his performance in blockbuster film ‘Naan Kadavul’. Directed by Bala, ‘Naan Kadavul’ bagged two National Film Awards, three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and three Vijay Awards.
Arya was last seen in anthology film ‘Sarvam’ directed by Vishnuvardhan that did reasonably well at the box office. The film starred Arya, Trisha Krishnan, J. D. Chakravarthy, Indrajith, Rohan Shiva, Anu Hassan and Prathap Pothan. Arya made a foray into Telugu cinema with the recently release ‘Varudu’ directed by Gunasekhar. The film features Allu Arjun as the protagonist while Arya plays the negative lead for the first time.
Arya is currently shooting for Rajesh’s romantic comedy ‘Boss Engira Bhaskaran’, Manikandan’s ‘Chikku Bukku’ opposite Shriya Saran and Bala’s comedy film ‘Avan Ivan’. His other two projects, namely AL Vijay’s ‘Madrasapattinam’ and Boopathy Pandian’s ‘Kaadhal Solla Vandhen’ are in the post production stage and will soon hit the screens.
