Behnaz Sarafpour: New Sensation in New York Fashion Industry
Behnaz Sarafpour, the New York based fashion designer came to limelight with her introductory women’s apparel line that was launched in 2001. The designer, alumni at Parsons School of Design was honored with the esteemed Golden Thimble Award at the school. Additionally, she has held design positions with a number of designers including Isaac Mizrahi, Anne Klein, Narciso Rodriguez, Barneys New York and Richard Tyler.

The Iranian-origin designer grew up in the U.S., and she married to Evan C. Shumeyko, the Ogilvy & Mather consultant in Bermuda in the year 2007. The couple lives in New York City’s West Village and in New Jersey.
Behnaz Sarafpour presents her collections in New York with some of the biggest names offering sponsorships. The Spring 2005 collection was presented at Tiffany & Co.’s 5th Avenue flagship store, and it was also sponsored by the jeweler.
Before she launched her own line in the year 2001, Behnaz Sarafpour was designing for the private label of Barney. Fashion big-names Julie Gilhart, VP-Merchandising, Barneys and Anna Wintour, Vogue had been known famously for supporting the talented designer to make her place among the biggest new names in New York including Derek Lam, Zac Posen and Proenza Schouler.
A member of the esteemed CFDA, Behnaz Sarafpour developed a close relationship at the time of her ready-to-wear Swarovski Perry Ellis Award nomination in the year 2002, 2003 as well as 2005. Behnaz Sarafpour, in 2006 came out with her collection consisting of dresses and accessories for Target Corporation’s Go International. The collection was highlighted with high-end items that were priced reasonably. The designer has also created a limited-edition Lancome lipstick, and also Scott Morrison’s Ernest Sewn collection of jeans. Her designs feature simple fabrics and cuts, along with high concentration of black marked with explosions of color. Her signature dresses and coats are great interest to editors and the fashion world experts. Her line of famous clients includes Anne Hathaway, Claire Danes, Mandy Moore, Cate Blanchett, Ivanak Trump, Jacquetta Wheeler, Selma Blair and Rachael McAdams. Behnaz Sarafpour has been working to integrate some regular practices in her collection for a number of seasons. However, her line of pretty and fresh Spring 2011 sportswear crystallized the designer’s market niche. The designer remarked about her collection that she has not planned an organic line, rather she wanted it to be more luxurious and at the same time have some organic elements. Behnaz Sarafpour created a nature theme in one of the patterned palm print that as cut into a jumpsuit that looked like a pajama, and one tiered strap dress. However, most of the dresses showcased the chic and cheerful elegance that carried her name. She came out with crisp dark jeans with a trench belt for the spring. For summer nights there was a droopy white tank in silk that was luxed up using silver stripes along with a taffeta skirt into which it was tucked in. Behnaz Sarafpour did her magic with green to leave a mark on a pair of denim overalls that other seemed to be completely out of place.
