Betsey Johnson is a famous fashion designer. She was born on August 10, 1942 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. She is well known for her quirky designs. Designs of Betsey Johnson are said to be unique and embroidered. At the end of her shows, she does somersault. In her childhood and young age she took several dance classes. Betsey Johnson graduated in Phi Beta Kappa from Syracuse University.

Betsey Johnson won the Mademoiselle Editor Contest. After winning this contest she started her fashion career. In 1960 Betsey Johnson was considered to be the most fashionable talented and up to date designer whereas designers of that time were considered ostentatious, conformist and unaware of the latest trends in fashion. After one year, she became a domestic designer for Paraphernalia (a boutique in New York). She took part in many fashion movements which include The Velvet Underground, Andy Warhol’s underground scene, Edie Sedgwick, Youthquake and Lou Reed. She designed sci-fi dresses, plastic shifts with circumspect stick on cover-ups which had a noise dress metal grommets at hem. These hem created melodious noise when the wearer of the dress moved. She also designed bell-bottoms and metal micro-mini skirts. At that time the dresses designed by Betsey Johnson were worn by actresses and models such as Brigitte Bardot, Jackie Kennedy, Julie Christie and Twiggy. In 1969, Betsey Johnson opened her own boutique in New York which she named Betsey Bunky Nini. She appointed Edie Sedgwick as her fashion house model. She was married to John Cale (Velvet Underground bassist). Their marriage didn’t have success and they had divorce in 1969. Later she engrossed in relationship with sculptor. In 1980s, she married again.

In 1970 she took control of “Alley Cat.” Alley Cat was popular with the musicians (Rock n Roll). Her first work for Alley Cat earned $5 billion. At that time, Betsey Johnson designed double knit A-line minis, drop-waist ballerina dresses, slip dresses and embroidered sweaters for Alley Cat and her own brand. Betsey Johnson also won Coty Award in 1972. She decided to start her own fashion brand in 1978. Betsey Johnson’s first and second collection had a great success. Her 3000 pieces of clothes were sold immediately. Betsey Johnson opened a wholesale store in SoHo. Now Betsey Johnson has more than forty five stores all over the world.

She was introduced to the Fashion Walk of Fame in 2002. In 2003, she decided to expand her designer brand. She introduced hats, scarves, handbags and other accessories to her collection. Betsey Johnson also contributed to the book of Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna named Cherry Bomb. In 2009 she was also awarded Medal of Honor for Lifetime Achievement in Fashion.
