The True Essence of Bulgarian Embroidery
Bulgarian embroidery is the heavy embroidery done on heavy materials of linen. This embroidery is mostly used in the colder regions where people can afford to wear heavy clothes and heavy embellishment dresses. It is the most traditional style of embroidery which cannot be modernized because it looks marvelously beautiful and stylish with its traditional touch. If we even try to bring changes to the Bulgarian embroidery, the true essence of it would finish and it would no more appear as the representation of a culture and a nation’s identical dress.
The traditional Bulgarian embroidery encompasses all styles of stitches like the cross stitch, the straight stitch, the loop stitch and the two faced stitch. These many styles of stitches allow the embroidery to have a diverse appearance of embellishment with the outline of every style being black. This black outline gives the unique as well as the typical Bulgarian look to the piece of work. Every piece of Bulgarian embroidery is made for casual usage as well as for formal usage, meaning that the cotton and wool threads give the casual appearance to the piece of cloth while the gold or metallic wires are mostly used for the formal wear as well as for the formal furnishing.
The designs and patterns of the Bulgarian embroidery are mostly geometrical patterns of floral as well as of various different designs but a certain edge are given to every start and every end of the pattern. Mot common designs are the floral ones which represent the landscape of the area and also the living standards of the people. It is very surprising that within the Bulgarian embroidery are many different styles of embroidery which differ from region to region, like the Somokov style, the Sofian style, the Sokai and the Gabrovon style. If one style focuses more on the hemming kind of embroidery of the edges of the cloth, then the other kind of embroidery is more about the wine red color of the thread combined with white color to enhance the maturity and the passion of every Bulgarian alive on the planet.
The thread which is mostly used in the Bulgarian embroidery is the wine red cotton thread and the white thread which represents the color of the spring as well as the color of adolescence and the color of purity respectively. The black color is equally important in the Bulgarian embroidery because it symbolizes the prominence of every motif and its uniqueness as compared to the embellishments of other cultures. It is not that these three colors limit the variety of the handicraft items because the various shades of the three vital colors are used and the different stitches add an element of variety to the pieces of work. The Bulgarian embroidery has to have three things which are the most vital in every Bulgarian piece of art; cadence, equilibrium and distinction. Without these three qualities a piece of handicraft is not complete and it cannot even represent the true Bulgarian culture.
