Chandrachur Singh is a famed Indian actor known to have starred in blockbuster films like ‘Maachis’, ‘Tere Mere Sapna’ and ‘Josh’. Chandrachur won immense critical acclaim for his performance in Gulzar’s ‘Maachis’ and he received several Best Male Debut Awards including the coveted Filmfare Award.

Chandrachur Singh was born on October 11, 1968 into a very prosperous family in New Delhi. His father is a former Member of Legislative Assembly from Aligarh constituency while his mother is the daughter of Bolangir’s Maharaja, Orissa. Chandrachur attended the reputed Doon School and later graduated from St. Stephens College, New Delhi.

Chandrachur Singh’s younger brothers Aditya Singh and Abhimanyu Singh run a well known TV production house named Contiloe films. Their production house has produced popular TV series like ‘Kashmeer’, ‘Jubilee Plus’, ‘Shhh... Koi Hai’, ‘Maharshtrache Nach Baliye’, ‘Aajaa Mahi Vay’, ‘Comedy Ka King Kaun’, ‘The Hunt for Femina’s Cover Girl’, ‘Krishna Arjun’, ‘Bitto’, ‘Poetic Social Mission Project’, ‘Ek Veer Stree ki Kahaani... Jhansi Ki Rani’, ‘Maniben.com’ and films like ‘Running to Stand Still’ and ‘Split Second Hand’.

Chandrachur Singh made his Bollywood debut in the year 1996 with the lead role in Joy Augustine’s ‘Tere Mere Sapne’. The film was produced by Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan under the ABCL banner. The film also starred new comers like Arshad Warsi, Priya Gill and Simran.

Chandrachur Singh gave a breakthrough performance in 1996 release critically acclaimed film ‘Maachis’ directed by Gulzar. Maachis was set in the backdrop of the 1980s Sikh insurgency in Punjab and how it changed a guy next door to a terrorist. ‘Maachis’ also starred actors like Om Puri, Tabu and Jimmy Shergill. ‘Maachis’ won the Golden Lotus Award – the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment while Chandrachur received the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award.

Chandrachur Singh played the male lead opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Mansoor Khan’s ‘Josh’. Other significant roles were played by Shahrukh Khan, Sharad Kapoor, Boman Irani and Nadira. This was the only film wherein Sharukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai were seen as brother-sister, the two later appeared as a couple in superhit films like ‘Mohabbatein’ and ‘Devdas’.

Chandrachur played a pivotal role in Raj Kanwar’s action thriller drama ‘Daag: The Fire’ alongside Sanjay Dutt and Mahima Chaudhary. The film became a huge box office success owing to its original screenplay and pioneering performances by the star cast. Chandrachur Singh next played a supporting role in ‘Kya Kehna’ alongside Priety Zinta, Saif Ali Khan, Anupam Kher and Farida Jalal. Directed by Kundan Shah, ‘Kya Kehna’ was based on the issue of pre-marital pregnancy. The film became a commercial as weel as critical success and won several awards including Filmfare Best Story Award for Honey Irani, IIFA Award for Technical Excellence - Best Screenplay for Farhan Akhtar and Sansui Best Actress Award for Preity Zinta.

Chandrachur Singh was later seen in supporting but significant roles in films like ‘Dil Kya Kare’ alongside Mahima Chaudhary, Ajay Devgan and Kajol, ‘Silsila Hai Pyar Ka’ opposite Karishma Kapoor, ‘Aamdani Atthani Kharchaa Rupaiyaa’ alongside Govinda, Juhi Chawla, Tabu, Johny Lever and Isha Koppikar. Chandrachur took a sabbatical from the Bollywood but was recently seen in a pivotal role in ‘Maruti Mera Dost’, a modern day tale of an ardent follower of Lord Hanumana.
