India is famous for its typical cultures and customs.  It is a diversified country that embraces special and unique techniques when it comes to arts and crafts. One of this is the Chikankari Embroidery. The word "chikan" comes from the Persian word "chikin" or “chikeen", that means a kind of elegant embroidered fabric or cloth. It is usually made of white floral embroidery used by the kings.  Actually, there are many types of Indian embroidery and apart from the Chikankari Embroidery all of them have their own special way to look awesome and unique from each other with the variety of colors, threads and stitches used. Embroidery beautifies a dress to a certain creative degree that makes it look appealing and attractive.

In India, there are different types of embroideries. The Religious Embroidery is very important to India since Indian people are known for their undying sincere devotion along with their different religions. It symbolizes powerful and timeless messages in ancient times. It is favorable in its design because it is descent and modest and worn in different religious activities and festivities. Apparently, these designs are continuously modified through the years but never been changed just to look different. Religious embroidery can also be seen on paintings, accessories, bags, jewelries and many other fashionable accessories. The Appliqué Embroidery requires needle technique since it needs other materials that are sewn to another piece of fabric to create artistic designs, patterns and pictures. It is particularly suitable for work that is strikingly most seen from a distance like that of curtains, wall paintings, cushions, bags and even banners.  Chikankari Embroidery is known to be very delicate and complicated therefore very time consuming art. This Chikankari embroidery work is mainly based in Lucknow. The methods done in Chikankari Embroidery work falls basically in three categories, the flat stitches, embossed stitches and the Jali work.

The other type of Indian embroidery is the Beaded Embroidery, the most liked form among the others. It is characterized by shiny beads of beautiful and attractive designs that most women prefer to have this type of embroidery. The beads on the dresses create unique sense of fashion on women which makes them look fabulous, glamorous and dashing. These beads may also appear on shoes, bags, fashion jewelries, household items and especially made handicrafts. Floral Embroidery, with colorful flowers on its designs, it gives freshness on the appearance and emphasizes natural beauty. Just like the Chikankari Embroidery, this type looks good on anyone who likes to have it. It is mostly seen on home furnishings, clothing, bed linens, pillows, etc. Patchwork Embroidery is a unique form of Indian embroidery that is famous to Indian markets. This can be done both by hands or machines that sew together small fabrics to create a larger one and creates a distinct look once it is finished. It is also being applied on bags, clothing and paintings.  But unlike these types, Chikankari Embroidery is the most difficult one. Today, Chikankari Embroidery is fast flourishing and enriching both the export and domestic markets.

Among all Indian works, Chikankari Embroidery basically is composed of a number of very important processes namely the washing, cutting, embroidery, printing stitching, printing and the finishing. The cutting and stitching involves the same person. Lay outs are suggested to minimize material wastes and the printing is by the use of wooden blocks dipped in dyes. The embroidery follows after which is done by women and then finally, the finishing and washing that includes acid treatment, bleaching, ironing and stiffening and may last from 10-12 days.
