Glamour behind Detachable Buttonhole Stitch
In ancient historical embroidery, detached buttonhole stitch is widely seen in Elizabethan Embroidery with attractive floral designs mostly on Jackets, coifs and in sweet bags too. Detachable buttonhole stitch is mostly done with many foundation threads that are worked on surfaces. It is highly recommended that piercing of the cloth must be avoided or the so called background stitching. The first step in doing detached buttonhole stitch is basically begins with single straight stitches or back or chain stitch for a longer one. Then try working on the foundation lines starting from right to the left. After the end of the foundation line simply enter again the fabric from its backside portion on the left side and nearly a short distance just below the foundation line. Work on the used thread which is positioned just on top of the foundation line and carefully insert the needle through the left side of the foundation line and avoid piercing through the fabric. Then pull gently the needle with the use of the working thread under it to form a corresponding loop. Don’t forget to make an open loop even just a small one but not too tight to close it. Start working on the foundation line by keeping the created loops even. At the end again of the foundation line, start the next row by working on the right side again into the in between the created stitches. Then work on the detached buttonhole stitch from side to side with its desired length. In the end get your needle back through the cloth and tie it properly. You can have additional tack down stitches necessary for the accent of the design. You can also create artistic designs by various shapes by increasing its width of the loop to decrease its width. Finally work on the final rows with a tighter loop to create a finished end. Use a tapestry needle to prevent piercing on the fabric.
In the famous detached buttonhole stitch, you don't get through the fabric as you do with the stitches in the attached buttonhole stitch. In the attached buttonhole, wide scope is needed for various stitches for different exotic patterns. The detached buttonhole stitch provides wider range for colorful dimensional effects to properly fold the buttonhole area to it and emphasize leaves and petals on the fabric. Detached buttonhole stitch is also referred to as closed blanket stitch. This kind of stitch is said to be detached because each stitch is done basing on the previous stitches not through the fabric.
You can do detached buttonhole stitch on any type of fabrics, either it may be countable or non countable. This stitch is very convenient to use if the cloth is held taut like that of a frame. If done in hand there is a tendency for the fabric to buckle, because it is with much ease to pull too tightly the fabric. Most often after seeing the final result of your embroidery work, you might notice that stitches are uneven along the bottom of the row. Stay calm and don't stress yourself. Being competent and confident with your work creates a refreshing and pleasant finished product.
