Dev Patel is a famed British actor known to have appeared in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and the popular British Television series ‘Skins’. Dev Patel undoubtedly became the most promising newcomer of the year 2009 with a breakthrough performance as Jamal Malik in the multiple Oscar winning film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

Dev Patel was born on 23rd April, 1990 to Anita Patel, a carer and Raj Patel, IT consultant in Harrow, England. Dev Patel attended the Longfield Middle School and later Whitmore High School. Dev is an amateur martial artist and holds a black belt. He also won the Bronze medal at the AIMAA World Championship, 2004 in Dublin.

Dev Patel was first seen in the role of a British-Muslim teenager, Anwar Kharral in the popular British teen drama ‘Skins’. The show was a commercial and critical success and won many prestigious awards including the Best Drama prize at the Rose d'Or ceremony and the Philips Audience Award at the BAFTA, among others. He next acted in a minor role in ITV romantic drama ‘Mister Eleven’. Dev Patel’s career took a glorious turn when he was cast by Danny Boyle in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ as the protagonist. The film was screened at the Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and later at the London Film Festival. It was released in US, UK and India on different dates in late 2008 and early 2009.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ became the biggest commercial and critical success worldwide earning eight Oscars, seven BAFATA awards and four Golden Globe Awards. In addition to the coveted Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, dev Patel won several awards for his performance in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ including the Black Reel Award for Best Actor, Black Reel Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, British Independent Film Award (BIFA) for the Most Promising Newcomer, Chicago Film Critics Association (CFCA) Award for the Most Promising Performer, National Board of Review (NBR) Award for the Best Breakthrough Performance, Phoenix Film Critics Society Award for Break Out On Camera, Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) Award for the Best Breakthrough Performance, Critics' Choice Award for Best Young Performer (Actor/Actress), Richard Attenborough Film for the Best Breakthrough, Richard Attenborough Film Award for Rising Star of the Year etc.

Dev Patel was also nominated for the Black Reel Award -Best Ensemble, Detroit Film Critics Society Award -Best Newcomer, BAFTA Award -Best Actor in a Leading Role, Evening Standard British Film Award- Most Promising Newcomer, London Critics' Circle Film Award - British Actor of the Year, London Critics' Circle Film Award -Young British Performer Of The Year, NAACP Image Award - Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award -Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, MTV Movie Awards- Best Kiss, MTV Movie Awards - Breakthrough Performance Male and European Film Awards -Best Actor.

Dev Patel will soon be seen in a significant role in M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘ The Last Airbender’ , an action fantasy flick adapted from the animated TV series ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’. It is rumored that Dev Patel replaced Jesse A. McCartney, the popular singer-songwriter, actor, and voice actor for the role of Prince Zuko in ‘The Last Airbender’.

Dev Patel is currently dating Freida Pinto, his co-star from ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The two are frequently spotted together at parties, film festivals and charity events.
