Dhanush was born as Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuriraja to notable film director Kasthuri Raja in Chennai. Dhanush’s elder brother Selvaraghavan is a well known film director recognised for his award winning film ‘Kaadhal Kondein’ starring Dhanush and Sonia Agarwal. Selvaraghavan was previously married to actress Sonia Agarwal but the two got a divorce recently.
Dhaush is married to Aishwarya Rajinikanth, daughter of the eminent actor Rajnikanth. Aishwarya Rajinikanth is a famed classical dancer and playback singer and has been honored with the prestigious Kalaimamani award from the Government of Tamil Nadu. Dhanush and Aishwarya are blessed with a son named Yathra.
Dhanush made his acting debut in ‘Thulluvadho Ilamai’ opposite debutant Sherin. The film was directed by his father Kasthuri Raja and written by his elder brother Selvaraghavan. Dhanush’s debut film became a blockbuster and was remade into Telugu as ‘Juniors’ starring Allari Naresh and Sherin. Dhanush gave a pioneering performance as a mentally challenged youth in ‘Kaadhal Kondein’ directed by his brother Selvaraghavan. The film starred Selvaraghavan’s ex-wife Sonia Agarwal as the female lead opposite Dhanush. The film became a huge commercial and critical success. Dhanush later appeared in superhit films like Subramaniam Siva’s directorial debut ‘Thiruda Thirudi’ opposite Chaya Singh, Boppathy Pandian’s ‘Devathayai Kanden’ opposite Sridevi Vijaykumar and Balu Mahendru’s ‘Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam’ opposite Priyamani. ‘Thiruda Thirudi’ was was later remade in Telugu titled ‘Donga Dongadi’ starring Manoj and Sadha. Despite appearing in a number of successful ventures, he received negative reviews for his films like S S Stanley’s ‘Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan’ alongside Karunas and Aparna Pillai, Ramana’s ‘Sullan’ alongside Sindhu Tolani, Manivannan and Pasupathy and his father’s ‘Dreams’. Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan’ and ‘Sullan’ were criticized on the basis that both were action films and dhanush was obviously not the apt choice for an action role owing to his lean physique. While ‘Dreams’ was categorized as another adult film with a lack of interesting storyline.
However, Dhanush soon returned with a bang and won over the critics by his performance in Selvaraghavan’s gangster film ‘Pudhupettai’ alongside Sneha and Sonia Agarwal. He played the male lead in Boopathy Pandian’s ‘Thiruvilayadal Aarambam’ opposite Shriya Saran. The film became a blockbuster and was remade into Telugu as ‘Takkari’ by Amma Rajashekhar.

Dhanush is currently shooting for ‘Aadu Kalam’ directed by Vetrimaran, also starring Taapsee Pannu. The film is in its post production stage and is slated to release in Auguat this year. It is also expected that Dhanush may play the male lead in his father-in-law Rajnikanth’s 1989 comedy flick ‘Mappillai’. The 1989 release was the remake of Chiranjeevi’s Telugu film ‘Athaikku Yammudu Ammaikku Mogudu’ and starred Rajinikanth, Amala and Srividya in lead roles.
