The Diversity in English Embroidery
English embroidery is the thread work of the old English days when the people of Europe used to wear collars and cuffs of handmade white embroidered needlework. The exact roots of the English embroidery could never be traced but the most previous samples are from the times of the Anglo-Saxon period when the Popes and the Cardinals used to wear heavily embroidered clothes and gowns filled with cotton thread work in various different patterns and designs. English embroidery is the actual embellishment done in the European times and it encompasses all kinds of embroidery of that time and that area.
The Broderie Anglaise, the cutwork and even the hole-patterned embroidery is part of the English embroidery. It means that in the previous times, it was not only the Broderie Anglaise style of embellishment which used to capture the motifs and threads of every person’s clothes and attire but it was also the cutwork and the needlework which people used to appreciate for their garments to be extravagantly beautiful.
Even the masterpieces for the church used to be embellished with the English embroidery of gold and silver and other colors and shades in cotton threads. The vestments, the stoles for the Popes and even the gowns of the cardinals were embroidered in the same style. The motif on the vestment is still very famous till today due to its magnificent lion stature and the gold embellishment which makes it highly important for the English people. The church especially used to consist of many pieces of art in the English embroidery because the church included of vestments which had many historical as well as biblical references embroidered on them.
The colors are infinite in the English embroidery, consisting of reds, blues, greens, white, black and many more colors which are made by combining all these basic colors. The English people were fond of colorful things around them and they were especially fond of the sceneries and the sheep, being the animal of their Prophet. So the main themes of the English embroidery also come from their biblical references which were Jesus Christ, the Last Supper and the sceneries with the sheep in most of them. The dresses of the church people did con consist of any faces but it only had a bale of flowers and leaves embroidered on them.
The English embroidery has given huge diversity as well as variety to the embroidery and embellishment done today on the garments and the attires of the people. The thread work and the cutwork are the most sought for and the most fundamental of the embroideries which is giving new inventions and new ideas to the embellishment done today by many people. If you notice, the art of this embroidery are never out of fashion and this is because these are the basic works of art for the English people without whom they cannot have their clothes and garments the finesse they need. Today, it is not only the English who prefer the English embroidery but it is also the other people of the world who love to have this thread wok on their clothes.
