Farhan Akhtar

Farhan Akhtar is an eminent writer- director- producer turned actor who made his acting debut with the award winning film ‘Rock On’. Moreover Farhan Akhtar is also a lyricist, playback singer and a television host. Born on 9 Hanuary 1974 in Mumbai, Farhan Akhtar is the son of notable lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar and writer- director Honey Irani. Farhan’s father Javed akhtar later married veteran actress Shabana Azmi.

Farhan Akhtar is the grandson of Jan Nisar Akhtar, a well known 20th century Indian poet of Urdu ghazals and nazms. Farhan’s sister Zoya Akhtar directed ‘Luck by Chance’ and is currently working on ‘Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara’, both starring Farhan Akhtar. She also assisted Farhan during the filming of ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ and ‘Lakshya’. Bollywood personalities Farah Khan and Sajid Khan are Farhan’s cousins. Farhan Akhtar is married to Adhuna Bhabani Akhtar who co-owns the BeBlunt Salon in South Mumbai with her brother. The couple is blessed with two daughters named Shakya and Akira.

Farhan Akhtar started working at an age of seventeen; his initial assignments included an apprenticeship with Manmohan Singh during the filming of ‘Lamhe’, assisting Pankaj Prashar in ‘Himalyaputra’ and a couple of other jobs with TV production houses. Farhan Akhtar started as a scriptwriter for Kundan Shah’s mega hit social drama ‘Kya Kehna’ starring Priety Zinta, Saif Ali Khan and Chandrachur Singh.

Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was released in the year 2001 and received the coveted National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Set in Urban Mumbai, the film starred established actors like Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni and Dimple Kapadia. Farhan Akhtar won accolades for the contemporary drama and was named among the most promising filmmakers with a global vision.

Farhan Akhtar next directed Hrithik Roshan- Priety Zinta starrer ‘Lakshya’ that could not fare very well at the box office but was declared a critical success. The film also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Om Puri and Boman Irani. Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Don - the Chase Begins Again’ starring Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Arjun Rampal became a blockbuster. The film was the remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s 1978 ‘Don’. Stunning starlet Kareena Kapoor performed a sizzling a dance number in ‘Don - the Chase Begins Again’. It is not known to many that Farhan Akhtar has written the lyrics for films like Ashutosh Gowarikar’s ‘Lagaan’ and Gurinder Chhadha’s ‘Bride and Prejudice’.

Farhan Akhtar made his acting debut in Abhishek Kapoor’s musical drama ‘Rock On!!’ alongside Arjun Rampal, Luke Kenny, Purab Kohli, Prachi Desai and Shahana Goswami. The film became a huge success and its screenplay was added to the Academy Film Archive. Rolling Stone featured the cast of ‘Rock On!!’ on its September 2008 issue cover page. The film won the national Award for the best Feature film and Farhan Akhtar received several Best Debut Male Actor awards including Filmfare, Star Screen and IIFA. Farhan Akhtar also did playback singing for the film and won positive reviews.

Farhan Akhtar was next seen in Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Luck by Chance’ opposite Konkona Sen Sharma and ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ opposite Deepika Padukone. Farhan Akhtar has cemented his position as an actor and will soon be seen in pivotal roles in Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara’, Sudhir Mishra’s ‘Dhruv’ and ‘Gulel’. He is also directing the much awaited ‘Don 2’ starring Shahrukh Khan in the lead role.
