Filet Embroidery

The Art of Filet Embroidery

Filet embroidery is the very old style of embroidery done with the hand but the thing which makes it different is that it is done on a material of net. The filet embroidery is the simplest style of thread work to be done net because the net already has holes and the stitch of the embroidery is done pretty loosely due to the distance between every string of the net material. After the filet embroidery is done, the whole piece of work gives a crochet look because of the loosely done stitches ad the apparent distance of the thread on the net. Since the material is net, the thread to be worked with is usually thick so that the thread becomes apparent to the viewer.

The filet embroidery is the oldest method to make laces of every kind because laces are net material or similar stuff on which the embroidery is done to make them look lavish as well as extravagant. The laces were used extensively by the ladies as well as the gents of the Victorian era where the work of threads and gemstones was highly expensive for the common man and since it could be done by hand and little thread and little material was used for it, people made it for them as well. The shuttle and the gauge rod were almost with every woman who could make the lace with filet embroidery at home for the rich ladies and whatever used to be left behind was for their own use.

Initially the filet embroidery was done by hand a home, but with the start of the industrial revolution, all the thread works were done with machines and women were no longer required to work so hard as to make the laces at home by needling for hours and hours. The filet embroidery is not only done with cotton threads or in one style of the stitch, rather it is done with two or more styles of stitches to bring variety to the production of laces and also to enhance the work of filet embroidery. The idea was initially taken from the fisherman’s net which used to look quiet artistic with all the weeds and the fishes stuck in every hole and every string of the net. So we should be thankful to the fishermen who gave the wonderful idea of the thread work on net.

The filet embroidery is done with many designs and patterns, but the traditional pattern of this thread work is the beautiful design of the bales of the wine tree growing in a curve style with leaves popping out in every direction but very naturally. The filet embroidery is the fundamental embroidery of many embellishments done on every garment of every man and woman. Today, this embroidery is highly recommended for the perfect picture to hang on the wall of your room to complete the décor of your household. It is also very common all over the world for its dynamic variety and its diversity in colors, designs and shades.
