Gary Graham: The Master of the Contemporary and Vintage

Gary Graham is a master of techniques and deconstruction and fabric behavior. The designer shrinks; machine quilts, dyes and frays material, and his creations can be termed as the meeting of rock & roll and fantasy.

Gary Graham has a wide-ranging treasure of vintage clothes in his collection that keeps inspiring him. And the Spring Collection 2011 saw him bring out finely fashioned, soft jackets from a century ago. Surprisingly, even through the designer cuts to the culture of the past, he is never mistaken about what his customers are looking to wear in the present.

The Spring collection saw Graham’s city girl running away to the greener countryside and trying to attune her urban clothes in the new environment. The bolero, delicately hand-beaded seemed to have been clipped off at the bottom, while the strong looks integrated embroidered dress found inspiration in a chair dumped in the woods. The pattern on the needlepoint cushion was never missing but the frame was added with leaves and sticks from the forests. A nonfigurative pine-needle print cut through the thick floral embroidery in the pure organza dress.

Gary Graham has a penchant for playing with volume with layered patterns, and the leggings and slips in some skirts seemed to be giving the same notion. And, this made the linings on the skirts to be coming gradually undone. The collection also witnessed the American designer bring out his debuting shoe collection. The heeled and jammed ankle boots in red, dark olive and tan left the clothes from the past ashore. Gary Graham exclaimed, as his clothing collection is, that the shoe collection is “precious” and at the same time “not so precious.”

Regarding his Fall 2011 Collection, Gary Graham remarks that he could have made it entirely serious but he wanted to make it completely humorous. The designer, recognized for his inspirations from research and intellectual back-stories, his work always contained a deep sense of moderation. However, the latest collection from Gary Graham is a complete change featured with youthful lightheartedness that clearly shows on the entire clothing range. The collection seemed to be originating around the 1982 St. Mark’s Place with Joan Jett mullets worked in jet-black, decorated with necklaces made of guess what? Safety pins. The range included converse in primary color and untidy sport socks.

In spite of the light tones, the fieldwork was as strong as in the past outdoor dresses. Gary Graham created a typical mythology vibration, suggesting The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell and model figures such as the orphan and the shepherd to modify his creation. The whole collection seems to feel heavy. However, the effect of the shepherd appeared enticing in a fitted maroon and brown blanket dress and persuasive in an elongated alpaca woven vest and worn over a pair of hand-dyed indigo leggings. The hand-dye print was among the strongest in all of the collections, with all the dresses being layered and thrown together in random. Among everything from Gary Graham on display, the complete mixture seemed to look entirely fresh.
