Genelia D’Souza is a well known Indian actress who appears in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada language films. Born on August 5, 1987 into a Catholic family of Mangalorean origin in Mumbai, Genelia is affectionately called Geenu. Genelia’s mother Jeanette D'Souza previously worked as a secretary to the MD of a pharmaceutical company, while her father Neil D'Souza, works with Tata Consultancy Services. She attended the Apostolic Carmel High School and later earned her Bachelor's Degree of Management Studies from St. Andrew's College in Mumbai. A sports enthusiast, Genelia was a State level athlete, sprinter and a National level Football player. Genelia began her modeling career at an age of fifteen when she featured in a TV commercial for Parker Pens alongside the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. Sharing the screen with Amitabh Bachchan was indeed a wonderful opportunity; Bachchan appreciated her spontaneity and vivacious persona. She was later seen in commercials for Fair & Lovely and alongside cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth for the 2003 Cricket World Cup advertisement.

Genelia D’Souza made her bollywood debut in Vijay K. Bhaskar’s ‘Tujhe Meri Kasam’ opposite debutant Ritesh Deshmukh. Since Genelia was not very keen on pursuing acting as a career, she refused to sign ‘Tujhe Meri Kasam’. However she saw the original Telugu film and loved the plot, finally she and Ritesh were seen in 2003 release ‘Tujhe Meri Kasam’. The movie failed at the box office and Genelia went unnoticed. Genelia later worked in regional language films and eventually became a Tollywood superstar. Her first Tamil and Telugu films ‘Boys’ and ‘Satyam’, respectively were released in 2003. Her performance won positive reviews and she became a familiar face in the South Indian film industry. Genelia’s second Hindi film Indra Kumar’s ‘Masti’ became a mega hit and Genelia’s portrayal of a dominant wife was well received.

In the year 2005, Genelia starred in a couple of unsuccessful films like Telugu movie ‘Naa Alludu’, Tamil entertainer ‘Sachein’ and patriotic drama ‘Subhash Chandra Bose, in Telugu. However Genelia’s Telugu romantic smash hit ‘Bommarillu’ became a huge commercial and critical success. Starring opposite Siddharth Narayan in ‘Bommarillu’, Genelia gave a phenomenal performance and was honored with the Golden Nandi award, Telugu Filmfare Award for Best Actress, Nandi Special Jury Award and Santosham Award for Best Actress. In the same year, she also starred in mega hits ‘Happy’ and ‘Raam’, both in Telugu. The following year Genelia received the FNCC Best Actress Award for Telegu blockbuster ‘Dhee’ and won critical acclaim for romantic thriller ‘Mr. Medhavi’. He also made her debut in Kannada language films in Satya in Love‘and played the lead in Tamil remake of ‘Bommarillu’- ‘Santhosh Subramaniam’. Genelia was nominated for the Filmfare Best Tamil Actress Award and Vijay Award for Best Actress for her performance in ‘Santhosh Subramaniam’.

After enjoying a flourishing career in South Indian cinema, Genelia returned to the Hindi film industry with Priyadarshan’s ‘Mere Baap Pehle Aap’ opposite Akshay Khanna. The movie did not fare well at the box office but the cuteness and vivacity of her performance was highly appreciated. Her most successful film, so far was released in late 2008, known to be the debut film of Imran Khan, nephew of renowned actor Aamir Khan. Titled ‘Jaane Tu …Ya Jaane Na’, the film was directed by Abbas Tyrewala and the movie became a huge success in India and overseas. Aamir Khan’s home production ‘Jaane Tu …Ya Jaane Na’ received many awards and Genelia’s freshness and a new style of acting earned her two nominations - Star Screen Award for Best Actress and Stardust Superstar of Tomorrow – Female. Genelia appeared in four blockbuster movies in four different languages in one calendar year and thus became a Limca World Record holder. These four superhit movies were ‘Bommarillu’ in Telugu, ‘Satya in Love’ in Kannada, ‘Santosh Subramaniam’ in Tamil and ‘Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na’ in Hindi. Genelia recently appeared in David Dhawan’s ‘Life Partner’ opposite Fardeen Khan and Ken Ghosh’s ‘Chance Pe Dance’ opposite Shahid Kapoor. Genelia D’Souza has made a number of public appearances in the last couple of years. She was seen judging the Gladrags Mega Model and Manhunt 2009 grand finale. She also appeared as the show stopper for Farah Khan’s jewelry designs at the HDIL India Couture Week. She made her television debut as the host of UTV’s ‘Big Switch’ aired on Bindass. Genelia has replaced top actresses Rani Mukherje and Priety Zinta in TV commercials for ‘Fanta’ and ‘Perk’ respectively. She was earlier dating actor Ritesh Deshmukh, however due to the disagreement of Ritesh’s father over their engagement led to the end of their romantic relationship. Ritesh Deshmukh’s father Vilasrao Deshmukh is a well known politician and has served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
