Great Centuries of the History of Embroidery

The history of embroidery has successfully travelled and reaches until in this recent generation. The great history of embroidery started when the people during the Iron Age realized that they could make use of the thread in putting together or joining the pieces of furs to make clothes. Aside from this, these people also perform some other methods that led to the discovery of the embroidery artwork. They have design their clothes by using bones, stones, beads and used threads to create various patterns. These activities was said to be the beginning of the blossom of the embroidery artwork in the world.

Embroidery is simply defined as the art of decorating or enhancing the fabric through the use of threads and embroidery needles. Although the exact date of the history of embroidery was not exactly recorded but some evidences of this artwork were found in Northern Europe, Zhou Dynasty China and Iron Age. The history of embroidery during the early 11 th century up to the middle of 13 th century tackles the existence of the English embroidery. The artwork has been very useful in ecclesiastical vestment and to their clothing. During this time, the Goldwork embroidery became very famous because it was being weaved into the fabric. This Goldwork embroidery was then became a trademark or the symbol of power and wealth. That is why the whole process of making this embroidery method took years for the skilled craftsmen to finish the legendary artwork.


Actually, the history of embroidery were said to be worldwide and some countries that were evidently seen with specimens of this artwork were India, Ancient Egypt and England. Today, each of this countries have their own translations and unique style and patterns that gives credit to their traditions, culture and as well as to their history. Ever since, the embroidery was considered to be a decoration to the fabric. In fact, there were some of the restored samples of this artwork from the early settler in America have brought their elegant artworks form the European country. Most of the crafts use a vegetable dyed handspun linen thread and some other crafts were made form silk and wool threads.

It was during 14 th to 15 th century where the embroidery artwork diminished because of the so called Black Death. This was the most tragic event in the history of embroidery since the knowledge and skills of the gifted embroiderer were not able to pass this timeless artwork to the succeeding generations. This scenario also affects the unique and precise details of the original embroidery because it was already been lost. But on the following century specifically on early 16 th to 17 th century, the craftsmen have employed this artwork to be used as an art for decorating other items aside from the fabrics. The skilled embroiderer has used this one for home furnishings and lavish costumes. This time was also the period of the so called Blackwork wherein the black colored silk thread was being embroidered on the white Lenin. It was also during this time that the Stumpwork embroidery became popular; this was the embroidery artwork using the designs of the biblical scenes. All these events marked the beautiful history of embroidery artwork.

In 18 th century, the embroidery designs where a combination of the western embroidery and the Chinese patterns and designs. In 19 th century, this was the greatest history of embroidery wherein it gives way to the invention of the machine embroidery.
