Jaya Bachchan is a veteran Indian actress who is also active in politics. Jaya is known for her versatility in all genres of cinema and a distinct style of acting. Jaya Bachchan was born on 9 April 1948 as Jaya Bhaduri to Bengali parents, Indira and Taroon Kumar Bhaduri. Her father was a notable writer, journalist and stage artist in Jabalpur.

She attended the St. Joseph's Convent School in Bhopal and later joined the reputed Film and Television Institute of India, Pune to study a course in acting.
Jaya married the legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan in the year 1973 and the super couple is blessed with two children. Daughter Shweta is married to industrialist Nikhil Nanda, the son of Ritu Nanda, daughter of film legend Raj Kapoor, and Rajan Nanda. Their son, Abhishek Bachchan, an actor is married to renowned actress Aishwarya Rai who is also a former Miss World.
A social activist and humanitarian, Jaya Bachchan is associated with Samajwadi Party and has been a member of Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament. She once again returned to the Rajya Sabha representing Samajwadi Party in July 2006.
Jaya commenced her cinematic journey as a child artist in notable filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film ‘Mahanagar’ after appearing in a diploma film ‘Suman’ at the FTII, Pune. She was also seen in the Bengali comedy film ‘Dhanni Meye’ that became a huge success. Jaya was picked for the leading role in ‘Guddi’ that became her first bollywood film. Jaya was blessed with daughter Shweta during the filming of ‘Sholay’, so she retired from Bollywood to focus on her daughter and personal life. However Jaya Bachchan appeared in Yash Chopra’s 1981 release romantic film ‘Silsila’ alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor and Rekha. She also wrote the story of ‘Shahenshah’ starring husband Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role.
Jaya made a comeback in the year 1998 with ‘Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa’ based on the backdrop of Naxalite movement. She won critical acclaim for a supporting role in ‘Fiza’ co-starring Karishma Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan. Jaya Bachchan also worked in Karan Johar's family drama ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ and ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’; Yashraj Films’ ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’.
