Jaya Prada in an eminent Indian actress known for having appeared in films in seven different languages including her mother tongue Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali, and Marathi. Besides being a successful actress, Jaya Prada is also a politician and a social activist.

Born on 3rd April, 1962 as Lalita Rani into a middle class family in Andhra Pradesh, Jaya Prada was extremely fond of dancing and therefore her mother enrolled her in dance and music classes at an age of seven. An extremely talented dancer, Jaya Prada is married to Srikanth Nahata, son of producer Sunderlal Nahata. Her marriage to Nahata stirred a lot of controversy as Srikanth did not divorce his first wife Chandra with whom he had three children. However, eventually the two ladies agreed to share their husband, Srikanth putting a pause to disturbing hullabaloo.

Jaya Prada was first spotted by a Telugu film director at the annual function of her school where she gave a riveting dance performance. Jaya was approached by the director to appear in a dance sequence in his film ‘Bhoomikosam’. Initially hesitant, she later agreed after being convinced by her family. The three minute dance sequence earned her a fee of Rupees ten; however it became the stepping stone to her subsequent success.

Her debut film in the lead role was 1976 release Telugu film K. Balachander's ‘Anthuleni Katha’ opposite Kamal Hassan. She later appeared in blockbuster hits ‘Siri Siri Muvva’, ‘Seetha Kalyanam’ and ‘Adavi Ramudu’ and became a superstar. Jaya Prada eventually plunged into Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada films and became the unrivalled queen of South Indian Cinema.

Jaya Prada ventured into Bollywood with ‘Sargam’, a remake of her super hit Telugu film ‘Siri Siri Muvva’. She appeared alongside Rishi Kapoor in ‘Sargam’ and the film became a mega success. However she was not seen in Hindi films for the next three years due to her inadequate knowledge of Hindi language. She then appeared in K. Vishwanath’s ‘Kaamchor’ opposite Rakesh Roshan after taking thorough Hindi lessons. After the success of ‘Kaamchor’, Jaya Prada was flooded with offers from Bollywood film directors and she starred in Prakash Mehra's ‘Sharaabi’ opposite Amitabh Bachchan and K. Vishwanath's ‘Sanjog’, she received Filmfare Best Actress nomination for both the films.

Jaya Prada continued her stride of success with smash hits in Tollywood films like K. Vishwanath's Telugu hit film ‘Sagara Sangamam’. Jaya Prada and Sridevi are supposed to have developed a rift as the two were the reigning queens of South Indian film industry as well as competitors in Bollywood. Despite their alleged cold war, the two have appeared in a dozen movies together, namely ‘Devta’, ‘Tohfaa’ and ‘Aulaad’.

Jaya Prada was the first choice for conservative roles that conformed to the Indian society and hugely appealed to the masses. Jaya Prada, in addition to being an actress also owns the Jaya Prada Theater in Chennai.

Jaya Prada was introduced to the political party TDP by a fellow actor N.T.Rama Rao; however she later joined Chandrababu Naidu and represented Andhra Pradesh in Rajya Sabha. Jaya Prada later joined the Samajwadi party and was twice elected as the member of Lok Sabha in the years 2004 and 2009.

Owing to differences with the party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, Jaya Prada and well known political leader Amar Singh withdrew from the Samajwadi party. It is now speculated that Jaya Prada will again be joining TDP.
