Joseph Altuzarra

In a small span of a few collections, the young Paris born Joseph Altuzarra has emerged as the crown prince among New York designers. He is in fact, the hottest talent among the new generation of young designers from Manhattan who have been successful in blending together top-end fashion support and at the same time arouses interest from party addicts and socialites. However, unlike his fellow designer and friend Alexander Wang, Altuzarra does not seem to be following a path, but creating one of his own, and when publicity in fashion goes a long way, his hype is accompanied with some serious expertise behind it.

Joseph Altuzarra started his career with an internship with Marc Jacobs and as a designer at Givenchy with Riccardo Tisci. However, one can compare him most with his inspiration, Tom Ford. Similar to Ford, Altuzarra has been successful in striking the right notes to mix sexuality with sophistication, that too with an intense interest in the body shape of a woman. Further, he is highly skilled in making it over as well.

The New York Fall 2011 show of Joseph Altuzarra started off with checkered dresses having tussling edges. The army parkas and the droopy brown cardigan looked as if they were flashbacks from the shaping moment. However, it wasn’t just Jacobs that was from the nineties that left an impact on Altuzarra this season. One could also find indications of Johan Galliano displayed in the silk, bias-cut slip dresses containing D-rings. The designer remarked backstage that the concept was to not have to think much regarding clothes, and it seemed exactly so, as this collection was a complete reversal from the bold cone-bust sheaths and highly particular tailoring displayed in his previous collection. Altuzarra added that he was on the lookout for something looser and longer, something feminine and sensual, but practical as well. He disclosed that a few pictures also motivated him – old pictures of Kate Moss adorning parkas on her evening clothes, when the days were that her most sought after accessory was Johnny Depp.

With his fixation on the nineties, Altuzarra finds himself spank amid things in the beginning months of the Fall 2011 season. One cannot take eyes off the designer’s interest in coats. He brought out one great outerwear after another, notably from the tailored tweed trenches to the parkas having furry hoods to a cape/bomber fusion that left everyone flashing back to the equally focused outerwear show from his friend Alexander Wang a few hours prior. Certainly he is going to make a hit with the retailers.

Along with all the stunning series, Altuzarra also displayed a pair of metal beads and fringe-dripping show stopper T-shirt dresses. And, all the girls are certainly going to ponder hard to find ways in order to fill their closets with these latest Fall collection from Joseph Altuzarra.
