Joseph Vijay, popularly known as Vijay is a renowned Tamil actor and playback singer who has received several awards like the prestigious Tamil Nadu State Film Award, Kalaimamani award, Vijay Award and an Honorary doctorate for his outstanding performances. Joseph Vijay usually appears in films of the action and romance genres. He has appeared in a number of TV commercials for brands like coca-Cola alongside Katrina Kaif and is also the brand ambassador of Chennai Super Kings, an IPL cricket team.

Vijay was born as Joseph Vijay C. to producer-director S. A. Chandrasekhar and classical singer Shobha Chandrasekhar on June 22, 1974 in Kilpakam, Tamil Nadu. He completed his education in Balalok in Virugambakkam and graduated from the reputed Loyola College, Chennai. Joseph Vijay, actor Surya Sivakumar, actor and television host Sanjeev and comedian Srinath are childhood friends. Joseph Vijay is married to Sangeetha Sornalingam and they are parents to a son named Jason Sanjay and daughter named Divya Saasha.

Joseph Vijay’s father S. A. Chandrasekhar has directed around sixty six films including the blockbusters like ‘Vetri’, ‘Sattam Oru Iruttarai’,’ Naan Sigappu Manidhan’, and ‘Mutham’ in Tamil and ‘Chattaniki Kallu Levu’ in Telugu. He also appeared in a couple of films, namely ‘Naan Sigappu Manithan’, ‘Darna Zaroori Hai’ and ‘Vasantha Ragam’.

Joseph Vijay started his acting career as a child artist in his father’s films and later made his adult debut in ‘Naalaya Theerpu’ followed by riveting performances in ‘Sendhoorapandi’, ‘Rasigan’ ‘Vishnu’, ‘Chandralekha’, ‘Coimbatore Maaple’ and ‘Poove Unakkaga’. He consolidated his position with films like Balasekaran’s ‘Love Today’ alongside Suvalakshmi and Raghuvaran, S. A. Chandrasekhar’s ‘Once More’ alongside Sivaji Ganesan and Simran Bagga and Vasanth’s ‘Nerruku Ner’ also starring Surya, Simran, Kausalya, Shanthi Krishna, Vivek and Raghuvaran.

Joseph Vijay won the coveted Tamil Nadu State film award for Best Actor for Fazil’s ‘Kadhalukku Mariyadhai’ also starring Shalini, Sivakumar and Radha Ravi. Joseph Vijay gave a pioneering performance in Perarasu’s ‘Thirupaachi’ and was honored with the Tamil Nadu State Film Special Award for Best Actor. ‘Thirupaachi’ also starred popular actors like Trisha Krishnan, Mallika, Chaya Singh, Livingston and Pasupathy. The film was later remade into Telugu as ‘Annavaram’ by Bhimaneni Srinivasa Rao starring Pawan Kalyan and Asin Thottumkal.

The next few years were very eventful in Vijay’s life as he appeared in several commercially successful films alongside top line actors. Joseph Vijay’s breakthrough performance was seen in Prabhu deva’s blockbuster action drama ‘Pokkiri’. The film that featured an ensemble cast including Vijay, Asin Thottumkal, Prakash Raj, Napoleon, Mukesh Tiwari, Vadivelu and Nassar won several awards at the Vijay Awards, Filmfare Awards, Mathrubhumi Awards and Isaiyaruvi Tamil Music Awards. Vijay received Vijay Award for Entertainer of the Year as well as a Filmfare nomination for best Tamil actor. ‘Pokkiri’ was remade into Hindi as ‘Wanted’ starring Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia. ‘Wanted’ also turned to be a runway success and won huge appreciation for Prabhu Deva and the entire cast.

Joseph Vijay won another Vijay Award for Favourite Hero for B. Babusivan’s Tamil action film ‘Vettaikaaran’ also starring Anushka Shetty who received the Vijay Award for Favourite Heroine. Joseph Vijay also obtained an Honorary doctorate owing to his contribution in the field of acting and playback singing.

Joseph Vijay is currently shooting for a Malayalam film titled ‘Bodyguard’ opposite Asin and M Raja’s ‘Velayudham’ alongside Genelia and Hansika Motwani. He may also play a pivotal role in the Tamil remake of Blockbuster Bollywood film ‘3 Idiots’ starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani.
