Recipient of the prestigious National Film Award, Kangana Ranaut is a well known bollywood actress. Kangana Ranaut hails from a small town Mandi in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh. Kangana was born on 20th March, 1987 to Asha Ranaut, a school teacher and Amardeep Ranaut, a businessman. Kangana has two siblings, Sister Rangoli and brother Akshit. Kangana spent her childhood in Dehradun and Shimla and also attended the DAV model school in Chandigarh. Kangana aspired to become a model and thus joined the Elite Modelling Agency, Delhi in 2003.
Kangana Ranaut joined the Smita Theatre Group in an effort to learn acting and trained under reputed theatre director Arvind Gaur. After participating in his workshop at the India Habitat Centre, she appeared in a number of plays including Girish Karnad's Taledanda (Rakt-Kalyan). Kangana Ranaut relocated to Mumbai to try her luck in the Bollywood and joined Asha Chandra’s acting course to polish her skills. Kangana was spotted by director Anurag Basu at cafe in Mumbai. He approached her for a leading role in ‘Gangster’ and after a few auditions, she became a part of the movie. ‘Gangster’ written by ace filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt was based on the love story of a gangster and also starred Emran Hashmi and Shiney Ahuja. The film became a huge success, both commercially as well as critically. The phenomenal performances by the entire cast and an exceptional soundtrack made this film a blockbuster hit and one of the top grossing films of 2006.

Kangana Ranaut received several Best Female Debut awards for ‘Gangster’ including the Filmfare, Star Screen, Zee Cine Awards, IIFA and Global Indian Film Awards. She was also honored with the Stardust Superstar of Tomorrow Award. Kangana next appeared in Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Woh Lamhe’ directed by Mohit Suri. Also starring Shiney Ahuja, the movie was supposedly based on the life of late Parveen Babi, a renowned bollywood actress. The movie did reasonably well at the box office while Kangana was appreciate in a role of a schizophrenic actress. Kangana also starred in Anurag Basu’s film ‘Life In A...Metro’ that revolved around the life of seven central characters living in Mumbai. The movie featured an ensemble cast including ring Dharmendra, Shilpa Shetty, Kay Kay Menon, Konkona Sen Sharma, Sharman Joshi, Shiney Ahuja and Irrfan Khan. The movie became a commercial and critical success in India and overseas. Kangana Ranaut received the Stardust Breakthrough Performance Award for her performance in ‘Life In A... Metro’.
Kangana Ranaut appeared in ‘Shaka Laka Boom Boom’ in a role of an aspiring singer alongside Bobby Deol, Upen Patel and Celina Jaitley. After being criticized by a co-star for her poor dancing skills, Kangana started training in classical and bollywood style dancing. She is also taking singing lessons from Amitabh Chakraborty. Kangana Ranaut has also worked in ‘Vaada Raha’ opposite bobby Deol and ‘Raaz- the Mystery Continues’ alongside Emran Hashmi. Her pioneering performance in Madhur Bhandarkar’s contemporary drama ‘Fashion’ earned her several Best Supporting Actress Award including the prestigious National Award, Filmfare and Star Screen. The film also starred Priyanka Chopra, Mugdha Godse and Arbaaz Khan. The film won huge commercial success and critical acclaim. Kangana Ranaut is today seen as the most promising star who is expected to create a distinct niche for herself. Kangana is working on a number of projects, like the Indian version of Walt Disney Pictures's ‘The Little Mermaid’ also featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Imran Khan. She is also working alongside Hrithik Roshan in Anurag Basu’s ‘Kites’ scheduled to release in May, 2010. Her other upcoming projects include ‘Knock Out’ alongside Sanjay Dutt and Irrfan Khan, ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai’, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ opposite R. Madhavan and ‘No Problem’.
