Kunal Kapoor was born on 18 October 1975 in New Delhi and is affectionately called Kunnu. Kunal Kapoor plunged into the film industry as an assistant director to Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra in ‘Aks’ starring Amitabh Bachchan, Nandita Das, Raveena Tandon and Manoj Bajpai. His tryst with acting was seen in MF Hussain’s ‘Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities’. Set in three cities, namely Hyderabad, Jaisalmer and Prague, ‘Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities’ was supposedly the result of Hussain’s own experience with his muse Madhuri Dixit. The film also starred Tabu, Raghuvir Yadav and Nadira Babbar. Though the film could not become a commercial success, it was appreciated by the critics and Kunal Kapoor was well received.

Kunal Kapoor was next seen in another Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra venture titled ‘Rang De Basanti’. Kunal Kapoor played a pivotal role alongside the perfectionist Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Soha Ali Khan. ‘Rang De Basanti’ based on a patriotic plot as experienced by the Indian youth became a blockbuster in Indian as well as overseas market. The film was not only a commercial success but also managed to won critical acclaim. Besides receiving numerous awards at the Indian film award ceremonies, ‘Rang De Basanti’ became India’s official entry the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards. It also received the prestigious BAFTA Award for the Best Foreign Language Film.

Kunal Kapoor shed his stereotypical image in Milan Luthria’s ‘Hattrick’ alongside Paresh Rawal, Rimi Sen, Nana Patekar and Danny Denzongpa. Based on cricket fever, the film was an average success at the box office. Kunal Kapoor proved his versatility by appearing in Aditya Chopra’s musical film ‘Aaja Nach Le’. ‘Aaja Nach Le’ is best remembered as Madhuri Dixit’s comeback film and also starred Konkona Sen Sharma and Akshaye Khanna. Kunal Kapoor was again seen opposite Konkona Sen Sharma in Yash Raj Films’ ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag - Journey Of A Woman’. Directed by acclaimed director Pradeep Sarkar, ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag - Journey Of A Woman’ also starred Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherji. Kunal Kapoor is an ardent fan of Jaya Bachchan and was extremely delighted to share the screen with her in ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag - Journey Of A Woman’. Kunal Kapoor also appeared in supporting roles in successful films like Sidhharth Anand’s ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ alongside Ranbir Kapoor, Bipasha Badu, Deepika Padukone and Minisha Lamba and Shyam Benegal’s comedy ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’ alongside Shreyas Talpade, Amrita Rao, Ravi Kishan, Ila Arun, Divya Dutta and Yashpal Sharma. The notable parallel cinema director Shyam Benegal was appreciated for his attempt with comedy in ’ Welcome to Sajjanpur’ after his only comedy film ‘Charandas Chor’ released way back in 1975. Kunal Kapoor is currently working on the animated version of ‘Ramayana’; he is lending his voice for the character of Rama in Raizada Rohit Jaising Vaid’s ‘Mahayoddha Rama’. Kunal Kapoor will also be seen in VV Vinayak’s Lamhaa‘alongside Sanjay Dutt and Bipasha Basu and will play a superhero in Anurag Kashyap’s next untitled film.
