Kunal Khemu is a well known Bollywood actor famed for appearing in mega hit film ‘Kalyug’ and critically acclaimed ‘Traffic Signal’. Kunal Khemu was the most popular child artist during late nineties and appeared in many superhit films like ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke’, ‘Raja Hindustani’, ‘Dushman’ and ‘Zakhm’.
Kunal was born on 12 May 1983 to actors Ravi and Jyoti Khemu in Srinagar, India. However his family later moved to New Delhi and finally settled in Mumbai. Kunal Khemu attendeed the Niranjanlal Dalmia High School and graduated from Narsee Monjee College, Mumbai.
Kunal Khemu started his acting career in Doordarshan’s ‘Gul Gulshan Gulfaam’ and later in Mahesh Bhatt's 1983 release ‘Sir’ alongside Naseeruddin Shah and Pooja Bhatt. Kunal Khemu portrayed the childhood of Akshay Kumar in ‘Angaaray’, Ajay Devgan in ‘Zakhm’ and Sajid Khan in ‘Tamanna’. He also appeared in significant roles in ‘Sir’ alongside Naseeruddin Shah, ‘Hain Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke’ alongside Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, ‘Raja Hindustani’ alongside Aamir Khan and Karishma Kapoor, ‘Bhai’ alongside Suniel Shetty, Sonali Bendre and Pooja Batra and ‘Dushman’ alongside Sanjay Dutt and Kajol.
Kunal Khemu made his adult debut in the year 2005 in ‘Kalyug’ produced by Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt with whom he had earlier worked with in films like ‘Tamanna’ and ‘Zakhm’. The film became an average success and earned rave reviews for its soundtrack. Kunal Khemu received accolades from the critics as well as audiences and he soon became a well known face.
Kunal earned the opportunity to work with acclaimed director Madhur Bhandarkar in ‘Traffic Signal’. ‘Traffic Signal’ was based on the lives of people of earned their living at the traffic signals in mUmbai, the film also starred Sudhir Mishra, Konkona Sen Sharma, Ranvir Shorey and Neetu Chandra. The film won two National Awards - Best Director for Madhur Bhandarkar and Best Make-up Artist for Moti Ram Palande.
Kunal next appeared in Priyadarshan’s comedy ‘Dhol’ alongside Sharman Joshi, Rajpal Yadav, Tusshar Kapoor, Tanushree Datta and Payal Rohtagi. His first attempt at comedy was indeed brilliant and later appeared in another comedy film ‘Dhoondte Reh Jaoge’. Produced by UTV Motion Pictures and directed by Umesh Shukla, ‘Dhoondte Reh Jaoge’ starred Sonu Sood, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, and Paresh Rawal in lead roles. The film did reasonably well at the box office and it was rumoured that Kunal and Soha Ali Khan were seeing each other.
Kunal appeared in a double role in ‘Superstar’ and gave an exemplary performance in portraying two utterly different characters. Kunal was next seen in Puneet Sira’s action flick ‘Jai Veeru’ alongside Fardeen Khan, Dia Mirza and Anjana Sukhani. ‘Jai Veeru’ was supposedly inspired from Hollywood film ‘Bulletproof’ starring Adam Sandler and Damon Wayans and the ‘Lethal Weapon’ starring Danny Glover and Mel Gibson. Kunal Khemu starred opposite girlfriend Soha Ali Khan in the fun film ‘99’ also starring Cyrus Broacha, actor and MTV VJ. ‘99’ won positive reviews from Indian as well as American press and became a hit among young and multiplex audiences.
Kunal Khemu will next be seen in Rohit Shetty’s ‘Golmaal 3’, the third film in the Golmaal series- earlier being ‘Golmaal’ and ‘Golmaal Returns’. ‘Golmaal 3’ also features popular actors like Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and Tusshar Kapoor. It is assumed that Kunal Khemu was recommended by Kareena Kapoor who is dating Soha ali Khan’s brother Saif Ali Khan.
