Mahi Gill is a bollywood actress who won immense critical acclaim for her debut Hindi film ‘Dev D’ released in 2009. However she started her acting career with Punjabi films and theatre plays. Mahi Gill was born as Rimpi Gill on 19th December 1975 in Chandigarh. She attended the Panjab University, Chandigarh and earned her Master’s Degree in 1998.

Since then she has been active in theatre and has appeared in many stage plays. Mahi loves to dance and is a well trained classical dancer. She considers her professor Mohan Maharshi and actor Dibyendu Bhattacharya as her mentors and has always acknowledged their contribution in her acting career. Mahi Gill made her acting debut in the 2003 release Punjabi film ‘Hawayein’ alongside Babbu Mann, Ammtoje Mann, and Sunny Mann.
Mahi Gill has also starred in Punjabi films ‘Mitti Wajaan Maardi’ and ‘Chakk De Phatte’. ‘Mitti Wajaan Mardi’ was a romantic drama based on the story of separation of a family due to the second marriage of the father with the sole purpose of obtaining an American citizenship. Sameep Kang’s 2008 release ‘Chakk De Phatte’ was a Punjabi comedy about four Punjabi boys trying to woo an NRI girl played by Mahi Gill.
However she shot to fame with her pioneering performance in Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Dev D’. Anurag saw Mahi in a party and chose her to play the female lead opposite Abhay Deol in ‘Dev D’. An unconventional and bold take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Bengali classic ‘Devdas’, ‘Dev D’ became a huge success, both commercially as well as critically. Mahi Gill portrayed the character of new age courageous Paro, while Abhay played Devdas and Kalki was seen in the role of Chandramukhi.
‘Dev D’ was termed as the generation X and path breaking film in the Indian film industry. The film earned rave reviews from the critics including a perfect 5/5 by NIkhat Azmi. The soundtrack of the film, especially ‘Emotional Attayachar’ became a rage among a public and topped the music charts for weeks. The film won six Filmfare awards including Critics Award for Best Performance Female for Mahi Gill, Best Supporting Actor Female for Kalki Koechlin, Best Production Design & Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Background Score and R D Burman Award for New Musical Talent for Amit Trivedi. The film was nominated at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards 2009 at Queensland Australia. ‘Dev D’ was recently premiered at 2010 Palm Springs International Film Festival.
After the success of ‘Dev D’, Mahi Gill signed a three movie deal with UTV and she appeared in ‘Gulaal’, ‘Aagey Se Right’. Anurag Kashayap’s ‘Gulaal’ starring Kay Kay Menon, Mahi Gill, Raj Singh Chaudhary, Abhimanyu Singh, Deepak Dobriyal, Ayesha Mohan, Jesse Randhawa, Piyush Mishra and Aditya Srivastava was screened at the Times BFI London Film Festival in 2009 and received accolades from the critics. ‘Aagey Se Right’ starring Shreyas Talpade, Shiv Pandit, Mahi Gill, Kay Kay Menon and Shenaz Treasurywala was the directorial debut of Indrajit Nattoji. ‘Aagey Se Right’ became the only Hindi film finalist at SXSW international Awards 2010.
Mahi Gill is expected to be seen in ‘Dabaang’ produced by Arbaaz Khan and starring Salman Khan and Shatrughan Sinha’s daughter Sonakshi Sinha. The film is directed by Anurag Kashyap’s brother Abhinav Singh Kashyap.
