Naseeruddin Shah is an eminent Indian actor turned director who has won the prestigious National Film Award and has also been honored with the Padma Bhushan award by the Government of India. Naseeruddin Shah is known for appearing in parallel cinema films, however he has also worked in several mainstream Bollywood projects. Naseeruddin Shah starred alongside Sean Connery, Peta Wilson, Tony Curran, Stuart Townsend and Shane West in Stephen Norrington’s superhero Hollywood film ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’.
Born on July 20, 1950 in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, Naseeruddin Shah is a graduate from the prestigious National School of Drama. He made his film debut in Shyam Benegal’s ‘Nishant’ that won the National Film Award for the Best Feature film in Hindi. Naseer was later seen in several critically acclaimed arthouse projects, usually alongside Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil, including ‘Manthan’, ‘Bhumika’, ‘Junoon’ etc. all directed by Shyam Benegal.
Naseeruddin Shah won his first national award in the year 1980 followed by Filmfare Best Actor Award for Govind Nihalani’s ‘Aakrosh’ also starring Smita Patil and Om Puri, Sai Paranjpye’s ‘Sparsh’ opposite Shabana Azmi, Ravindra Dharmaraj’s ‘Chakra’ opposite Smita Patil, Shekhar Kapur’s ‘Masoom’ also starring Shabana Azmi, Tanuja, Supriya Pathak and Saeed Jaffrey.
Naseeruddin Shah won the The Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival and National Award for Best Actor for Goutam Ghose’s ‘Paar’. Shabana Azmi also won a National award for this film. Naseeruddin Shah won rave reviews for his perfprmance in ‘Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Ata Hai’ directed by Saeed Akhtar Mirza and ‘Bhavni Bhavai’, a Gujarati film directed by Ketan Mehta.
Naseer’s successful mainstream films include Subhash Ghai’s ‘Karma’ also starring Dilip Kumar, Nutan, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Sridevi and Poonam Dhillon, Ketan Mehta’s ‘Hero Hiralal’ opposite Sanjana Kapoor, Rajeev Rai’s ‘Tridev’ alongside Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit and Sonam, Rajiv Rai’s ‘Vishwatma’ also starring Sunny Deol, Chunky Pandey, Sonam and Divya Bharati. During nineties, he starred in pivotal roles in films like ‘Chamatkar’, ‘Chahat’, ‘Kabhi haan Kabhi Naa’, ‘Mohra’, ‘Sir’ and ‘Chinagate’, among others.

Naseeruddin Shah has also starred in critically and commercially successful films like ‘Maqbool’, ‘Main Hoon Na’, ‘Kkrish’, ‘Paheli’, ‘Omkara’, ‘Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na’ and ‘Firaaq’. He played the protagonist in 2008 release ‘A Wednesday’ directed by Neeraj Pandey. The film won huge critical acclaim, awards and nominations at the Filmfare and Star Screen Awards. It also received a nomination at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards held at Queensland, Australia.
His Abhishek Chaubey’s directorial debut ‘Ishqiya’ alongside Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi became a box office hit and received rave reviews from the crtics. He was recently seen in Prakash Jha’s multistarrer political drama ‘Rajneeti’ that also became a super success. Naseeruddin Shah’s forthcoming films include Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’ alongside Priyanka Chopra and Neil Nitin Mukesh and Anup Kurian’s ‘The Hunt’.
Naseeruddin Shah is married to fellow actor Ratna Pathak Shah and the two are blessed with sons Imaad and Irhaan. However he also has a daughter named Heeba from his first marriage. He was earlier married to Manara Sikri, Surekha Sikri’s sister. Later he married Ratna Pathak Shah after the death of his first wife. The two have appeared together in films like ‘Mirch Masala’, ‘The Perfect Murder’, ‘Paheli’ and ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’. Naseer also directed a film named ‘Yun Hota To Kya Hota’ starring himself, his wife Ratna Pathak Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma, Irfan Khan, Jimmy Shergill, Ayesha Takia, Paresh Rawal and Boman Irani.
