Learn the magic of Open Chain Stitch!
Open chain stitch is also known as roman chain stitch, square chain or ladder stitch. In essence open stitch resembles more appropriately the chain stitch. There can be more than one ways of working on the open chain stitch; you can work on it from an opened perspective or a closed perspective only through making adjustments to spaces that are between the stitches. Now many of you may have been wondering about whether there is any particular type of fabric or thread required or not? Well, not really; you can work the open chain stitch with any ribbon or thread. However, the actual size and width of thread being used, determines the overall size of open chain stitch.
Learning to actually use the open chain stitch is not really difficult and you can apply it wherever you desire. Before anything else, you need to apply or draw the design on the fabric that you want to work with the stitched pattern or needlework. Marking a design beforehand, primarily, reduces the overall complexity of the needlework and stitching. You may then firmly place the fabric appropriately in a hoop that is used for embroidery purposes primarily. The first step is to hold the thread tail on the back of fabric and firmly secure the thread through initial few stitches.
You must stay cautious enough not to tie the thread in a knot as this may show up in the front where you are working. You may mark parallel form guidelines (two only). This can be done with the help of a faded marker and this is only to further make the whole needlework process easy and understandable. With practice and expertise you may not have to repeatedly do this drill. Now insert the needle in the fabric’s back side from the left and then keep holding the thread securely via left thumb. You may then have to pierce the needle in the drawn lines on the right side of the design.
Then take out the needle towards the left line of the drawn pattern. After this, you may then, wrap the thread under needle point and then pull to the front of fabric. Afterwards insert the needle in fabric towards the left line and then start on to the next stitch. The stitching is being done in loop form in the open chain stitch and this gives rise to a beautiful and sophisticated pattern. You may continue the open chain stitch for as long as you desire or the design require in a form of ladder or chain.
The open chain stitch designs may also be decorated with the help of beads, colonial knot and French knots. These decorative measures may be placed in the middle of the working pattern and you may stitch via a bulky thread. In order to finish the stitch, weave it under some stitches that are on back of fabric. Avoid knotting the thread. The open chain stitch is primarily associated with delicacy and essence of feminine taste. If you desire to look a bit different and tasteful and decorate your dresses, then open chain stitch may provide a venue for you.
