Pankaj Kapoor is a three time National Award winning actor best remembered for critically acclaimed films like ‘Ek Doctor Ki Maut’, ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ and ‘Maqbool’. He became a popular name after he appeared in teleseries ‘Karamchand’, a detective show aired on DD National and the satirical comedy ‘Office Office’ aired on SAB TV.

Pankaj Kappor was born on May 29, 1954 in Ludhiana. He earned an Engineering degree from New Delhi in 1973 and later joined the National School of Drama. He graduated from the NSD in 1976 and also won the Best Actor award. Pankaj Kappor married film and TV actress Neelima Azeem and the two had a son Shahid Kapoor. Shahid Kapoor is a popular Bollywood actor who recently appeared in Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Kaminey’ opposite Priyanka Chopra. Pankaj and Neelima divorced in 1984 and he married Supriya Pathak a couple of years later.
Supriya Pathak is a popular Indian actress known for her phenomenal performance in Star Plus’s super successful comedy show ‘Khichdi’. She has also acted in critically acclaimed films like ‘Mirch Masala’, ‘Kalyug’, ‘Masoom’, ‘Bazaar’ and ‘Delhi 6’ and ‘Wake up Sid’ recently. Pankaj Kapoor and Supriya are blessed with a son and a daughter.

Pankaj Kapoor made his film debut in Shyam Benegal’s ‘Arohan’ alongside Om Puri and Victor Banerjee. He later starred in parallel cinema films like Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ alongside Ben Kingsley, Kundan Shah’s ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ alongside Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Bhakti Barve, Satish Shah, Om Puri and Neena Gupta, Saeed Akhtar Mirza’s ‘Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!’ co-starring Naseeruddin Shah, Deepti Naval, Bhisham Sahni and Dina Pathak, Basu Chatterjee’s ‘Chameli ki Shaadi’ alongside Anil Kapoor and Amrita Singh and ‘Ek Ruka Hua Faisla’ and Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘Khamosh’ alongside Amol Palekar, Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi. ‘Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!’ won the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare.
Pankaj Kapoor won the prestigious National Film Award - Special Jury Award for his performance in 1991 release ‘Ek Doctor ki Maut’ directed by Tapan Sinha. The film also received the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film. During nineties, Pankaj Kapoor was seen in pivotal roles in films like Mani Ratnam’s ‘Roja’ alongside Arvind Swamy and Madhoo and Rajiv Mehra’s ‘Ram Jaane’ alongside Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla. ‘Roja’ received Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration and Golden St. George for Best Film at the Moscow International Film Festival.

Pankaj Kapoor played Kareena Kapoor’s father in Rajshri Films’ ‘Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon’ also starring Hrithik Roshan and abhishrk Bachchan. He was seen in a negative role in Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Dus’ alongside Sanjay Dutt, Zayed Khan, Sunil Shetty,Abhishek Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty and Esha Deol. Pankaj Kapoor gave an outstanding performance in Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Maqbool’. Inspired from Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, the film was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Pankaj Kapoor received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance for ‘Maqbool’.
Pankaj Kapoor’s directorial debut film ‘Mausam’ starring Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor is expected to be released anytime this year. Pankaj Kapoor directed over seventy four stage plays and Tv serials including’ Mohandas B.A.L.L.B’, ‘Wah Bhai Wah’, ‘Sahabji Biwiji Ghulamji and Drishtanth’, ‘Kanak Di Balli,’ ‘Albert's Bridge’ and ‘Panchvan Savaar’.
