Parsi is referred to as a member of Zorostoan religious sect in India. Gara is a breathtakingly a beautiful attire worn by the Parsi bride and ladies too. Its history creates a colorful mark just like the Parsi Gara Work. It is a part of Parsi family heirlooms, thus becomes one of the most priced collector items with its rare intricate work of art. Parsi Gara Work is a special kind of embroidery which originated from China 300 years ago and it is considered China's home industry. This is a delicate kind of embroidery since this Parsi Gara Work is so fine that it is so difficult to distinguish the right and the wrong sides. According to the Chinese, it would take approximately eight to nine months to complete one gara depending on the complexity and density of the design. Parsi Gara Work appeared to be very expensive that only rich people can afford to buy it during the past four to five decades.
Parsi Gara Work is a special creation from the Parsi community has been tremendously admired by the fashion industry all over the world. The embroidery represented the ancient lifestyles, royalty scenes and images, figures, houses, rivers, flowers, trees, leaves, birds with vivid colors and stitches that make it more realistic to the human eye. Even motifs from the well known Chinese Pagodas like the riverbanks and its various characters like soldiers and cranes are also well manifested. Traditionally, the old gara was worn properly over the head, with only one ear being exposed to the public. This is introduced to India by Parsi traders who used to travel to Ancient China to trade. The making of the gara is characterized by various designs drawn on paper. Followed by the actual colors chosen and considered a sample plan. Then it was given later on to the craftsmen for them to study the sample plan. The design is then traced and repeated several times to the sari, make the possible adjustments until the designs are perfectly blended with each other. There are varieties of colors being selected. Parsi Gara Work is done with different colors besides the violet, wine red, navy blue, white or off white, gold threads is also used. The spirit of workmanship is most vital in the making of a Parsi Gara Work as the embroidery is exquisitely fine and dainty.
There are also several types of Gara with peculiar names like the kanda and papeta gaga that literally mean potatoes, and onions that is associated with large pink and yellow polka dots wherein the pink stands for onions and the yellow for the potatoes. The karolia or spider design is on flowers. The chakli/chakli motif for the male and female sparrow and so with the peacock designs. The uniqueness of Parsi Gara Work is considered superb once the embroidery is finished.
The Parsi Gara work is a splendid traditional work of art because much of its embroidery is done with powerful intricate designs. These designs may be done on satin, silk and georgette materials. The price of the Gara depends on the quality of its embroidery and the age too and the more old the Gara is the more valuable it becomes. Today, it is considered a fashion item in most of Asian markets.
