Representation of Parsi families, Parsi sarees

Parsi sarees are considered to be one of the most attractive sarees. These sarees are very much popular among the fashion loving women of India. As it is obvious from the name these sarees are considered as traditional dress of women belonging to Parsi families. These sarees have an intricate work of designing. And due to this Parsi sarees are little bit costly as compared to other sarees. These sarees have become a symbol of a women belonging to royal family. The design on Parsi sarees is one design form of Chinese tradition and culture. So we can say that these sarees represent the tradition and culture of china in a very elegant and stylish way.

A colorful garment that is used in the manufacturing of Parsi sarees is named a gara. Once Parsi traders brought this colorful garment in India, Parsi people used this garment on the wedding ceremonies of their boys and girls. With the passage of time, this garment has become a symbol of Parsi fashion in India. The original Parsi sarees made from gara are bulky and women feel it difficult to wear, as these sarees have wok of embroidery on them which makes them very heavy. These sarees are mostly color red as purple and violet. When gara was introduced in India, most of craftsmen tried to copy the design on gara. But original gara is identified by its net design and beauty. Other colors that are usually used in designing these sarees are red, navy blue, white and off white as well.

As the work done on designing a gara is very much intricate and heavy. So time duration to completely design one saree is about 9 months. Now a day cost of gara is about twenty five thousand rupees. And most of garas cost even more than this. There are different categories of designers who design Parsi sarees. Some are specialized in designing flowers, some are specialized in designing tress and some are in designing the houses. So different craftsmen work together to design different Parsi sarees. These designers are from all over the India.

As these sarees are handmade, the designing on left border of saree is exactly alike the designing on right border of saree. There is not even a difference of single bead or flower. The design on saree represents a story; these designs are made on the borders of sarees.

The price of gara depends upon the type of work or deigning on it. If the designing is intricate or complex than it is definitely has high cost, whereas sarees with light work are usually low in price.

There are further two types of gara commonly named as kanda and papeta. The meaning of kanda is onion and meaning of papeta is potato. The pink dots on gara represent onion and yellow dots represent potatoes.

The designing can be done on whole saree or it can also be done on just borders of saree. It totally depends on creativity of designer that what kind of work he does.

It is very interesting to note that jewelry is never worn with Parsi sarees. As these sarees are very much beautiful themselves, so no jewelry is required.
