R Madhavan is an established Indian film actor, who has starred in many successful and acclaimed films in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. He has received several awards for his exemplary performances, including Filmfare Awards in various categories. Madhavan has a huge female fan following and is one of the most respected stars of the south Indian film industry.

Madhavan was born on June 1, 1970 in Jamshedpur to Ranganathan, a Tata Steel senior management executive and Saroja, a Bonk of India manager. While in school, he was an all rounder and soon after his graduation, he represented India as its cultural ambassador in Canada. He won the Maharashtra Best Cadet Award following which he made a trip to England with three other NCC Cadets. He received training with the Royal Army, the Air Force and the Navy but could not pursue it as a career owing to his age. Madhavan later took public speaking courses and won the Indian Public Speaking Championship. Consequently he represented India at the Young Businessmen Conference in held in Tokyo, Japan.

Madhavan married Sarita Birje, an air hostess by profession and the couple is blessed with a son named Vedant. Madhavan joined the film industry after his marriage at an age of twenty nine. He has appeared in many popular television shows like ‘Ghar Jamai’, ‘Banegi Apni Baat’, ‘Sea Hawks’, ‘Saaya’ and ‘Tol Mol ke Bol’. Madhavan made his film debut with a small role in 1997 release English film ‘Inferno’ alongside Don Wilson, Rick Hill and Gary Graver. His first breakthrough role was seen in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film ‘Alaipayuthey’ opposite Shalini. One of the songs from its soundtrack was later featured in Hollywood film ‘The Accidental Husband’.

Madhavan was seen in blockbuster Tamil films like ‘Minnale’ alongside Abbas and Reema Sen, ‘Dumm Dumm Dumm’ opposite Jyothika, ‘Run’ opposite Meera Jasmine and Mani Ratnam’s ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ opposite Simran Bagga. ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ earned six National Film Awards, six Filmfare Awards and several other awards at International Film festivals. Madhavan‘s Tamil mega hit film ‘Minnale’ was remade into Hindi as ‘Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein’. It was his debut Bollywood film and starred Saif Ali Khan and Diya Mirza in pivotal roles. Madhavan later appeared in critically acclaimed films like Sundar C’s ‘Anbe Sivam’, Mouli’s ‘Nala Damayanthi’ and Vikraman’s ‘Priyamana Thozhi’. Madhavan was honored with Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for ‘Run’, ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ and ‘Anbe Sivam’. Madhavan won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his riveting performance in Mani Ratnam’s acclaimed Tamil film ‘Aayutha Ezhuthu’ that was remade into Hindi as ‘Yuva’. Madhavan was replaced by Abhishek Bachchan in the Bollywood version, however according to the critics, Madhavan undoubtedly outplayed Abhishek Bachchan’s performance. His next film ‘Priyasakhi’ opposite Sadha became the first ever Indian movie to be dubbed into Zulu. The year 2006 proved to be pretty eventful for Madhahavan as he appeared in three blockbuster films, namely Bollywood film ‘Rang De Basanti’, Tamil films- ‘Thambi’ and ‘Rendu’. ‘Rang De Basanti’ became India’s official entry to the Academy Awards and the Golden Globe Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film. It was also nominated at the 2006 BAFTA awards and won several awards in India including the National Award for Most Popular Film. Madhavan’s first on screen kiss was seen in Mani Ratnam’s mega hit ‘Guru’ starring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Vidya Balan. Madhavan and Vidya Balan appeared in a lip locking sequence in the film and the pair as later seen in TV commercials for the telecom giant Airtel. Madhavan was recently seen in the bollywood blockbuster ‘3 Idiots’ alongside Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor. The film was directed by Rajkumar Hirani and became the highest grosser of the year.
