R. Parthiban, popularly known as Parthiban is an acclaimed Tamil actor, director, writer and producer. Parthiban has been honored with several awards including the coveted national Award and Tamil nadu State fIlm Award for films like ‘Pudhiya Paadhai’, ‘Bharathi Kannamma’, ‘Housefull’, ‘Azhagi’ and ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’.
Parthiban began his filmy career with ‘Pudhiya Paadhai’ that won the prestigious National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil. Parthiban directed as well as starred in the critically acclaimed ‘Pudhiya Paadhai’. Later he worked on a few films as an actor-director and producer, namely ‘Sugamana Sumaigal’, ‘Ulle Veliye’, ‘Sarigamapadani’ and ‘Pullaikuttikkaaran’. Parthiban won rave reviews for Tamil film ‘Bharathi Kannama’ written and directed by Cheran. The film also starred Meena, Vijayakumar and Vadivelu in pivotal roles. The film became a commercial as well as critical success and Parthiban won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor.

Parthiban shot to fame with the success of ‘Housefull’ released in the year 1999. Directed and produced by Parthiban, ‘Housefull’ starred Parthiban himself, Vikram, Roja, Suvalakshmi, Vadivelu and Pasupathy. Parthiban earned several laurels including National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Director and Tamil Nadu State Film Special Award for Best Film.
Parthiban starred in several mega hit films like1999 release Guinness World Record-winning Tamil comedy-drama film ‘Suyamvaram’, Rajakumaran’s ‘Nee Varuvai Ena’ alongside Ajith Kumar, Devayani and Ramesh Khanna, Selva’s ‘James Pandu’ alongside Prabhu Deva, Vikraman’s ‘Unnai Kodu Ennai Tharuvan’ alongside Ajith Kumar, Simran and Nassar and Cheran’s ‘Vetri Kodu Kattu’ also starring Murali, Meena, Manorama and Malavika. ‘Vetri Kodu Kattu’ received the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues in 2000.
Parthiban was seen in exemplary roles in Thangar Bachchan’s ‘Azhagi’ alongside Nandita Das and Devyani, ‘Kannadi Pookal’ alongside Kaveri, Sarath Babu, Anand Raj and Nizhalgal Ravi, ‘Kundakka Mandakka’ alongside Lakshmi Rai, Vadivelu and Mallika and Padmamagan’s ‘Ammuvagiya Naan’ co-starring Bharathi, Mahadevan and Thennavan.
Parthivan produced, directed and starred in 2002 release ‘Ivan’, 2004 release ‘Kudaikul Mazhai ’ and ‘Pachchak Kuthira’, all belonging to different genres. ‘Ivan’ starred Meena and Soundarya as the female leads; it was the first film wherein Parthiban and Soundarya were seen as a pair. ‘Kudaikul Mazhai ’ was a romantic thriller film that could not fare well at the box office but was a huge critical success. It was shown in several festivals and award ceremonies, including the Germany Movie Awards, the film also won several awards for its distinct storyline and screenplay. ‘Pachchak Kuthira’ portrayed Parthiban as a ruthless gangster who abandons his ways after getting married to a soft hearted poor girl played by Namitha.
Parthiban was recently seen in Thiru’s romantic thriller ‘Azhagaana Ponnuthan’ co-starring Namitha and Kartheesh and Selvaraghavan’s adventure thriller ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ alongside Karthi Sivakumar, Reemma Sen and Andrea Jeremiah. ‘Azhagaana Ponnuthan’ is the supposedly Tamil version of an Italian film titled ‘Malèna’. Parthiban is presently directing and acting in ‘Viththagan’.
R. Parthiban was married to Tamil actress Seetha known for films like ‘Maruthu Pandi’ , ‘Sankar Guru’ and ‘Guru Sisyan’. They together have a daughter named P.S. Keerthana who is an upcoming actress. She appeared as a child artist in Mani Ratnam’s National Award winning film ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’. Keerthana received the National Film Award for Best Child Artist. Parthiban and Seetha are now divorced and Seetha now appears in TV serials and character roles in films.
