Raima Sen is an Indian actress who has starred in critically acclaimed Hindi and Bengali films. Raima Sen was born as Raima Dev Varma on 11th November, 1979 in Mumbai. Raima’s father Maharaja Bharat Kishore Dev Burman, also called Bharat Dev Varma belongs to the Royal family of Tripura. Her mother Moon Moon Sen is a well known actress who has appeared in Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi and Kannada films.

Raima’s maternal grandmother is the legendary actress Suchitra Sen , known for her performances in films like Bimal Roy’s ‘Devdas’ and Gulzar’s ‘Aandhi’. Raima’s paternal grandmother Ila Devi, the princess of Cooch Behar was the elder sister of Gayatri Devi, the Maharani of Jaipur. Raima Sen’s creative talent and a regal flamboyance can be attributed to her genes.
Raima Sen began her acting career with a small role in Vinay Shukla’s National Award winning film ‘Godmother’ starring Shabana Azmi, Milind Gunaji and Nirmal Pandey in the lead roles. She was next seen as Raveena Tandon’s daughter in Kalpana Lazmi’s ‘Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence’. The film was distributed by GoI’s National Film Development Corporation of India owing to its social subject matter.
Raima Sen received rave reviews for her performance in the Bengali film titled ‘Chokher Bali’ directed by distinguished filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh. The film was based on Rabindranath Tagore’s novel of the same name. The National Award winning film starred Prasenjit, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan andRaima Sen in lead roles. The film was nominated for the Golden Leopard Best Film award at the Locarno International Film Festival in the year 2003. ‘Chokher Bali’ also won Indian National award for best costume design 2003.
Raima’s next pioneering performance was seen in Pardeep Sarkar’s ‘Parineeta’ alongside Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan and Sanjay Dutt. Raima SEn also appeared in a few Hindi commercial cinema films like ‘99.9 FM’, Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Dus’ opposite Suneil Shetty, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘Eklavya: The Royal Guard’ alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Sharmila Tagore, Sanjay Dutt and Vidya Balan, Reema Kagti’s ‘Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd’ opposite Kay Kay Menon, Gautam Ghose’s ‘Yatra’ alongside Nana Patekar, Rekha and Deepti Naval, Navdeep Singh’s ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’ alongside Abhay Deol and Gul Panag, Sachin Yardi’s ‘C Kkompany’ opposite Tusshar Kapoor , Mani Shankar’s ‘Mukhbir’ alongside Samir Dattani and Suneil Shetty, ‘Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye’ opposite Randeep Hooda and a supporting role in Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Teen Patti’.
Raima Sen has received rave reviews for her powerful performances in contemporary parallel cinema Bengali films. Raima Sen starred in Buddhadev Dasgupta’s National Award winner ‘Swapner Din’ alongside Prasenjit Chatterjee and Rimi Sen. She also won the BFJA - Most Promising Actress Award for her performance in Sandip Ray’s ‘Nishijapon’. Raima Sen once again teamed up with Rituparno Ghosh in ‘Antar Mahal’ starring Jackie Shroff, Rupa Ganguly, Soha Ali Khan and Abhishek Bachchan in pivotal roles.
Raima Sen appeared along with an ensemble cast including Shyan Munshi, Parambrata Chatterjee, Peeya Rai Chowdhary, Victor Banerjee, Soumitra Chatterjee, Mamata Shankar and Biswajit Chakraborty in Anjan Dutta’s ‘The Bong Connection’. Raima Sen was most recently seen in Aparna Sen’s ‘The Japanese Wife’ alongside Rahul Bose, Chigusa Takaku, Moushumi Chatterjee, Rudranil Ghosh and Kunal Basu.
