Raj Babbar was born on 23 June 1952 in Dharan in Nepal and graduated from the Agra College and later joined the NSD. Raj Babbar married Nadira Babbar, his batch mate from the National School of Drama and the couple had two chidren Srya Babbar and Juhi Babbar, both actors. Nadira Babbar is an eminent theatre personality and has also starred in films like ‘Bride and Prejudice’ and ‘Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities’. Raj Babbar got romantically involved with the legendary actress Late Smita Patil. The two got married and had a son Prateek Babbar. Smita Died owing to complications after childbirth. Prateek Babbar is a budding actor and was seen in a supporting role in Imran Khan- Genelia starrer ‘Jaane tu Ya Jaane na’.
Raj Babbar shot to fame with B R Chopra’s ‘Insaaf Ka Tarazu’ also starring Zeenat Aman and Padmini Kohlapure. The film was the remake of Hollywood superhit ‘Lipstick’ starring Margaux Hemingway, Chris Sarandon and Mariel Hemingway. ‘Insaaf Ka Tarazu’ became a commercial as well as critical success and Raj Babbar received the Filmfare nomination for the Best actor.Raj Babbar starred in several hit films including Shyam Benegal’s Kalyug‘ alongside Rekha and Shashi Kapoor, Muzaffar Ali’s ‘Umrao Jaan’ alongside Rekha, Farooq Shaikh and Naseeruddin Shah, B R Chopra’s ‘Nikaah’ alongside Deepak Parashar and Salma Agha, Lekh Tandon’s ‘Agar Tum Na Hote’ alongside Rajesh Khanna and Rekha, Rajkumar Kohli’s ‘Naukar Biwi Ka’ alongside Dharmendra, Anita Raj and Reena Roy, Rajkumar Santoshi’s ‘Ghayal’ alongside Sunny Deol and Meenakshi Sheshadri.

Raj Babbar has been active in politics since the year 1999; he was previously a member of the Samajwadi Party and has recently joined the Indian National Congress. Raj Babbar has served as the Member of Parliament for four times in a row.
