Basic Stitch in Sewing- Running Stitch
Whether, the sewing technique is embroidery, Hand sewing, crocheting, hemming, basting or any other sewing technique there will be one thing common in it, is that running stitch will be present in all of these. Among the different types of stitches used, this stitch is most widely used is simple stitch. The importance of the running stitch in sewing techniques and much more things about this particular stitch will be discussed here.
Running stitch is very easy to sew the designs; it is just a matter of passing the needle in and out of the cloth. This basic definition of this stitch will make us to think that the thread length will be same in the top and bottom layer of the fabric, but the result will prove our thinking will be wrong. As it is well known fact that the fabrics are creeps, flexible, extendable in nature, so do the stitching threads exhibits the same properties. When we use any fabrics which are constructed on the basics of running stitch, we are imposing more tension on the lower layer of the clothes because the clothes are tightly stitched by running stitch. So threads in these region will experience more tension to compensate tension created in the bottom layer the top layer threads will extent so the stitches in the top layer also extends which makes the running stitch thread length will be more in the top layer.
It is clear that running stitch will be in a single row alignment and there won’t be any crossing over in it, Running stitch is also called as straight stitch. It is implicit that the running stitch has very good strength in holding the sewing thread and different layers of fabric very well. Running stitch becomes the basic constructional stitch in all types of sewing.
Running stitch is used to stitch elemental seams in any form of stitch, itclearly indicates that the running stitch can hold the seams in a strengthen way, straight stitch are used in tailoring. This property of holding different pieces of cloth makes the usage of running stitch in sewing much more demandable. It depicts clearly the assembly of singular pieces of cloth in a better way this stitch is used to assemble the pieces of cloth in hand sewing.
Running stitch also holds the different layer of fabrics in a much efficient and effective way. As it is known that the quilting of winter garments needs a stitch which is capable of holding different layers of wadding and the upper layer of fabric in an effective manner, there comes role of this simple and efficient stitch in quilting. It is obviously necessary that the running stitch has more important role to play in batting and wadding, as this both is similar to quilting. Running stitch also used to prop up the padded stitch.
Wherever you see a design of embroidery hand sewing which has more number of designs on the top layer of the fabric, it implies that the design is made up of running stitch.
