Satin Stitch

Use Satin Stitch For Embroidery Work In Small Spaces

Satin Stitch is also called damask stitch. This is one of the earliest stitches that have evolved over time and it is utilized in order to fill-up small average spaces. Satin Stitch is generally used in various traditional embroidery works in China , India and Japan . In order to ensure even edge, this stitch work consists of flat stitches worked in series. Satin Stitch is simple to work, with neat and long stitches being made closely along the margins. The thread is brought within the fabric and closed in a single stitch. The needle is then brought close to this stitch and the shape is filled up.

While working with Satin Stitch ensure that it is not used for broad spaces because this stitch loosens after some time. But if you need to work on broad spaces, then it is better to use other variants of Satin Stitch – short and long stitches. The different types of satinstitches include encroaching Satin Stitch, brick stitch, padded Satin Stitch, and short and long stitch. The most useful thread for using with this stitch is the commonly used embroidery thread. This is because it twists comparatively less than the standard thread. Ensure that the thread is of good quality so that it gives an even result.

Satin Stitch is one of the oldest stitching techniques which is highly valued. This technique can be used in order to stitch in small areas, but long stitches will loosen out after some time. You can also use this stitching technique in order to create appliqué embroidery designs. Satin Stitch generally refers to a number of stitches that are made side by side. You can either use this stitching technique for decorative purpose or to join two different pieces of fabric.

The following step by step process guides you with using this stitching technique. First, when you work Satin Stitch with a machine, set the machine’s setting to ‘zigzag’ mode. Next use this stitch in order to fix an appliqué with another fabric and ensure that it has been affixed properly. Here you can use an iron-on fusible web. Next, create even, straight and parallel stitches by the raw edge of this appliqué. And, then the sewing needle is brought up from the appliqué and taken down into the fabric. Ensure that the stitches are close and as even as possible. Next, an appliqué is stitched with this technique using a machine. The machine is then set on zigzag mode and the length and width of the stitch is adjusted until you get the desired size of stitches.

In order to get good results, first work on some scrap fabric. The stitches should be kept as small as possible, but at the same time give attention that you are getting the effect that is required. With long stitches you are not going to get the thoroughness as you would get with shorter stitches. Longer stitches can even lead the fabric to wrinkle. The appliqué areas can be outlined using either a Satin Stitch that is hand-sewn or machine sewn.
