Shell Stitch : A Stitching Technique For a Wide Range of Outfits

Shell Stitch is a form of crochet stitch, which is a special type of needlework worked by interconnecting looped stitches using a curved needle. A shell in itself is a bunch of stitches that are done within a single stitch or area, and generally, they are double crochet. The single crochets and alternating shells allow you to work this stitch pattern in an easy and fast way. The Shell Stitch is generally shaped like a semi circle or an arc. Shell Stitch works the thread around the fabric’s edge in a configuration that resembles a shell. This technique utilizes a hook in order to create a chain of stitches, from which you can creates different designs. These chain stitches are utilized in order to spread loops on the hook and develop pattern areas.

Shell Stitch created using single crochet develops solid pattern bars and designs in an open work pattern. And, the patterns created with double crochet are utilized in similar way as the single crochet, but the width in this case is two times. Commonly, the method used for this stitch is through working a number of long stitches along the foundation fabric and by fastening the two ends using short stitches. And it should be remembered that Shell Stitch is to be done in rows and not in rounds. Basically, a Shell Stitch consists of a number of full stitches that are done in a single stitch. And, you can use them in order to develop a particular look in a pattern.

You can create shells with double crochet, half double crochet, double treble and more. There are different types of shell stitches including crazy shell, diagonal shell, cross-over shell, triton shell and solid shell. This crochet stitch is quite enjoyable to work with, leading to its huge popularity. You can use this stitching technique with different items including sweaters, dish clothes, tote bags, afghans and more. The color options in this technique are optional – you may use solid color patterns to work on this stitch or simply use some colors. This technique can be worked out using some basic stitches, and once you are acquainted with these stitches, they will be used for a wide range of crocheted items.

You can work a Shell Stitch using a combination of stitches like single crochet, double crochet, half-double crochet, treble as well as double treble crochet. You can create large sized shell with the help of treble and double treble crochet. This will also help you complete the work in a fast way. This stitch can even be made using just two stitches and you can create as wide a shell as you want with large number of stitches, with each one making an individual shell.

Shell Stitch is most commonly used in sweaters and Afghans. Even though the shell can be of different sizes, the basic idea remains the same – a number of stitches from the lower row, then a number of skipped stitches in order to keep the stitches and rows even.
