The multitalented Shruti Hassan is an Indian singer, actress and music composer. Shruti has appeared in a few Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films. Born on 28th January, 1986 to renowned actors, Kamal Hasaan and Sarika, Shruti holds great interest in music and cinema.

She attributes her good looks and a passion for cinema to her genes. Shruti attended the Abacus in Chennai and later studied psychology at St Andrew’s College, Mumbai. Shruti joined the Musicians Institute in California, US to learn the techniques of music composing. Shruti’s younger sister Akshara represents India in Ballroom Latin dancing.
Shruti Hassan started her career as a singer and later turned to acting. She made her singing debut at an age of six when she sang for the veteran music composer Ilaiyaraaja. Her first song was featured in her father Kamal Hassan’s film ‘Thevar Mahan ’. Her first Hindi song was featured in ‘Chachi 420’ directed by Kamal Hassan. She again sang for her father’s critically acclaimed film ‘Hey Ram’ for which she sang the Hindi and Tamil versions of the song Rama Rama with her father, Kamal Hassan.
Shruti won accolades for her singing performance in Ilayaraaja’s music album. Shruti Hassan considers herself fortunate enough to have got an opportunity to sing with legendary singer K J Yesudas for the movie 'En Mana Vaanil' in the song 'Roattorap paattuch chaththam'. Shruti has also sung under the composition of Harris Jayaraj for Gautham Menon's Tamil film ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’.
Besides singing, Shruti Haasan composed the music for the 2009 release Tamil film ‘Unnaipol Oruvan’ starring her father Kamal Haasan in the leading role. The film was co-produced by Kamal Hassan under Rajkamal International. The film is a remake of the successful Hindi film, ‘A Wednesday!’ starring Naseerudin Shah. Shruti Hassan also serves as the lead vocalist of an alternative rock band named ‘The Extramentals’.
The sultry rock star, Shruti Hassan plunged into modeling and was seen on the cover pages of magazines like Frappe!, Verve, Savvy etc. She also appeared in Raghav Sachchar’s music video.
Shruti made her acting debut at an age of fourteen in a cameo appearance in critically acclaimed ‘Hey Ram’. Directed by her father, Kamal Hassan, ‘Hey Ram’ was a biopic of Mahatma Gandhi, wherein Shruti was played the character of Vallabhbhai Patel’s daughter. Shruti refused a number of South Indian films including a lead role in Venkat Prabhu's ‘Saroja’.
Shruti signed Nishikanth Kamath’s ‘Endrendrum Punnagai’ opposite R. Madhavan that later got shelved prior to production. Shruti was later seen in Soham Shah’s ‘Luck’ alongside Imran Khan, Mithun Chakrobarty, Ravi Kishen, among others. Despite huge publicity, the film failed to do well at the box office and was ripped by the critics. The film also featured a song in the voice of Shruti Hassan that was later added to the soundtrack.
Shruti Hassan is presently working on a Telugu project called ‘Yodha’, she will also be seen in A. R. Murugadoss’s untitled Tamil film.
Shruti Hassan is supposedly dating the Tollywood hunk Siddharth who has previously appeared in blockbuster ‘Rang De Basanti’. Shruti was earlier linked to the ‘Rock On!’ director Abhishek Kapoor. Siddharth who has been divorced once was in a serious romantic relationship with actress Soha Ali Khan. Shruti and Siddharth are working together in the Telugu film ‘Yodha’ and their chemistry is pretty visible on the sets.
