Sudeep

Sudeep is a popular Kannada actor who has also starred in a couple of Bollywood films like ‘Phoonk’ and ‘Rann’. Sudeep recently ventured into film direction with the hit musical film ‘Just Math Mathalli’ and also owns a production house named Kicha Creations. Sudeep has received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for three consecutive years and has also won the coveted Karnataka State Award for Best Actor.

Born on September2, 1975 in Shimoga, Sudeep is also known as Kichha. Sudeep was supposed to appear in ‘O Kusuma Bale’ and ‘Brahma’, however both the projects could not be completed and he made his debut in ‘Thayava’. He later played supporting roles in ‘Prathyartha’ and ‘Sparsha’ directed by Sunil Kumar Desai. Sudeep’s pioneering performance in the 2001 release ‘Huchha’ earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Directed by N Omprakash Rao, ‘Huchha’ starred Sudeep, Rekha and Avinash. ‘Huccha’ was the remake of Bala’s blockbuster film ‘Sethu’ starring Vikram, Sivakumar and Abitha. The film was also made in Hindi as ‘Tere Naam’ starring Salman Khan and Bhumika Chawla. ‘Tere Naam’ was a huge box office success and received immense critical acclaim.

Sudeep next starred in films like ‘Ranga SSLC’, ‘Gooli’, ‘Swami Muthu’ and ‘My Autograph’ etc. He earned huge appreciation for his performance in Kannada film ‘Nandi’ directed by D.Rajendrababu. Sudeep received the Filmfare Best Actor Award and Karnataka State Award for the Best Actor for ‘Nandi’. He won another Filmfare Award for Best Actor for critically acclaimed ‘Swami Muthu’.

Suddep starred in Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar’s ‘Maathaad Maathaadu Mallige’ alongside Dr.Vishnuvardan, Suhasini and Rangayana Raghu and Mahesh’s ‘Mussanjemaatu’ opposite Ramya. ‘Mussanjemaatu’ received two Filmfare Awards for Best Playback Singers- male as well as female. Sudeep plunged into film direction with ‘Just Math Mathalli’, a romantic-musical film produced by Shanker Gowda. Intially he wanted to direct an action film but the producer loved the concept of ‘Just Math Mathalli’ and thus Sudeep agreed to direct it.

‘Just Math Mathalli’ received positive reviews and did reasonably well at the box office. However a controversy stirred during the shoot of ‘Just Math Mathalli’ when some differences cropped up between the lead actress Ramya and the dance director Harsha. It is believed that Ramya even attempted suicide on the sets of the film. In fact the dance association refused to work with Ramya owing to her misbehaviour with Harsha, the association also demanded a public apology from Ramya.

Sudeep made his Bollywood debut in Ram Gopal Varma’s paranormal thriller ‘Phoonk’ alongside Varun, Amruta Khanvilkar and Ahsaas Channa. ‘Phoonk’ turned out to be a surprise hit and its sequel ‘Phoonk 2’ was recently released. However ‘Phhonk 2’ could not be as successful as its prequel. Sudeep starred alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Ritesh Deshmukh, Paresh Rawal, Gul Panag, Rajat Kapoor and Mohnish Bahl in Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Rann’. The film opened to mixed reviews and bombed at the box office but Sudeep won accolades for his performance.

Sudeep is currently filming for Ram Gopal Varma’s high budget project titled ‘Rakta Charitra’ co-starring Surya Sivakumar, Vivek Oberoi, Shatrughan Sinha, Raj Babbar and Priyamani. The film is simultaneously being made in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Sudeep has recently been honored with the Suvarna Award for the Most Popular Actor and Sudeep is currently playing the host and mentor in Suvarna TV’s reality show ‘Pyate Hudgeer, Halli Lifu’.
