Tarun attended the Doon School and later earned a business management degree from Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania. He returned to India in the year 1987 and joined his family business of selling machine tools and oil field equipment.
 Tarun revolutionized the fashion and retailing sector in India by opening the first fashion boutique in India, called 'Ensemble', the first multibrand store. Tarun founded the Tarun Tahiliani design studio in the year 1990 and joined FIT for a crash course in designing and technique to hone his technical skills. Tarun Tahiliani received an associate degree from the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. Tarun Tahiliani’s solo debut fashion show, The Rubaiyat was held at a Gala Fundraiser in the Dorchester Hotel in London in 1994 and since then he has showcased his riveting collections in an innumerable shows worldwide. The brand Tarun Tahiliani specializes in womenswear- couture, casuals, bridal and occasion wear, menswear and accessories. Tarun Tahiliani runs the Ensemble and Tarun Tahiliani Design Studios in New Delhi and Mumbai.
Tarun Tahiliani is the first Indian designer to have received an invitation to showcase his designs at the coveted Milan Fashion Week. Tarun Tahiliani was honored with the Moet and Chandon Tribute award for the Indian Designer of the year in 2004. In the same year he represented India at the Hong Kong Fashion Week. He also received the F Award for the Best Women’s Couture Designer.
Tarun Tahiliani’s collections were showcased at several international fashion extravaganzas in the year 2005, including Milan Fashion Week, the Fashion Coterie in New York, Moscow Fashion Week, Johannesburg Fashion Week and the first ever Durban Fashion Week. In the year 2006, Tarun Tahiliani designed for the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, Blender’s Pride Fashion Show, Bangalore, Maruti Estillo Launch Fashion Show in New Delhi and a fashion show for Teachers Resource Center in Pakistan. One of his greatest achievements that year includes the ‘Order of The Star of Italian Solidarity’ conferred upon him by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also earned a lifetime achievement award along with the Best Women’s couture designer at the F Awards.
Recently his collections were showcased at the AIS fashion show, Johnnie Walker Gold Polo Match fashion show, Chivas Studio fashion show, Castle Lager show, Johnnie Gold Show, MAC launch Party show and Breast Cancer Patients Benefit Foundation fashion show. Tarun shifted the base of Tahiliani Designs Private Limited from Mehrauli to Gurgaon in the year 2008.
Tarun Tahiliani has designed for a number of celebrities including Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Rani Mukherjee, Soha Ali Khan, Ayesha Takia, Urmila Matondkar, Gauri Khan, Sandra Long, Vikram Chatwal, Priya Chatwal, among others.
Supermodels like Aishwarya Rai, Mehr Jessia, Noyonika Chatterjee, Simar Dugal, Neha Kapur, Nina Manuel, Madhu Sapre, Ujjwala Raut, Honor Fraser, Sonalika Sahay, Sapna Kumar, Diandra Soares and Shyamolie have walked the ramp for Tarun Tahiliani.
