Acclaimed for groundbreaking performances in blockbuster hits ‘Rangeela’ and ‘Satya’, Urmila Matondkar is a popular bollywood actress. Urmila was born on 4th February, 1974 in Mumbai. Urmila started working in Hindi films as a child artist at a tender age of 6. She was first seen in Shyam Benegal’s ‘Kalyug’ released in 1980. ‘Kalyug’ was a contemporary version of the mythological epic ‘Mahabharat’ and starred distinguished actors like Shashi Kapoor, Rekha, Raj Babbar and Supriya Pathak.

Urmila was appreciated for her performance in critically acclaimed ‘Masoom’ directed by Shekhar Kapoor. She later appeared as a child artist in movies like ‘Sur Sangam’, ‘Dacait’, ‘Zindagi’ and ‘Bade Ghar Ki Beti’. Her first film in a leading role was N. Chandra’s ‘Narsimha’. Despite appearing in several films in 1992 and 1993, success seemed to elude her. Urmila starred in ‘Chamatkar’ opposite Shahrukh Khan, in ‘Shreeman Aashiq’ alongside Rishi Kapoor and Anupam Kher, ‘Aa Gale Lag Jaa’ opposite Jugal Hansraj and Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Drohi’.

Urmila Matondkar joined the league of top line bollywood actresses with Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Rangeela’. Urmila played the character of a middle class girl who aspires to become an actress. Her stunning dance sequences and genuine acting earned her positive reviews and she received her first Filmfare Best Actress Award Nomination. She next appeared with Kamal Hassan in ‘Hindustani’ and in ‘Judaai’ alongside Anil Kapoor and Sridevi. Both the films fared well at the box office and Urmila was well received. She also earned the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Nomination for ‘Judaai’.

Urmila’s next phenomenal performances were seen in Ram Gopal Verma’s ‘Daud’ and ‘Satya’. Though ‘Daud’ could not do well at the box office however her role as Dayashankar won accolades. Based on the backdrop of Mumbai underworld, Satya starred J. D. Chakravarthy, Manoj Bajpai, and Shefali Shah. Also dubbed in Tamil and Telugu, ‘Satya’ earned six Filmfare Awards including the Best Movie- Critics Choice. Urmila Matondkar received another Filmfare Best Actress Nomination.

After success of ‘Rangeela’ and ‘Satya’, Ram Gopal Varma and Urmila Matondkar worked on a number of critically acclaimed projects, namely, ‘Kaun’, ‘Mast’, ‘Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya’, ‘Bhoot’ and ‘Ek Hasina Thi’. Urmila played the negative lead in ‘Pyar Tune Kya Kiya’ and ‘Kaun’. Her role as an obsessive lover in ‘Pyar Tune Kya Kiya’ earned her a Filmfare Best Villain Nomination. Urmila Matondkar was seen in reasonably successful movies like ‘Jaanam Samjha Karo’, ‘Hum Tum Pe Marte Hain’ and ‘Khoobsurat’.

Urmila Matondkar garnered critical acclaim for her brilliant performances in ‘Pinjar’, Khalid Mohammed’s ‘Tehzeeb’ and RGV’s ‘Bhoot’. Her portrayal as a young Indian girl in ‘Pinjar’ based on the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan received rave reviews. However her best performance was seen in RGV’s paranormal thriller ‘Bhoot’ where she played a ghost possessed woman. The variation and crispness of her enactment earned her the Best Actress Award at several ceremonies including the Filmfare and Star Screen.

Urmila Matondkar gained recognition for movies like ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ and ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara’. She won her second Bollywood Movie Award for Best Actress for ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara’. Urmila is also known for her sensuous dance numbers in ‘China Gate’, ‘Company’, ‘Lajja’ and ‘Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag’. She made her singing debut in Asha Bhonsle’s album ‘Asha and Friends Vol 1’. Urmila appeared on television as a host in a series called ‘Waar Parriwar’ aired on Sony TV. Matondkar was last seen in recent movies like ‘Speed’, ‘EMI’ and ‘Karzzzz’.
