Vidya Balan is a versatile bollywood actress who has appeared in super hit movies like ’Parineeta’, ‘Lago Raho Munnabhai’, ‘Heyy Babyy’ and ‘Paa’. Born on 1st January, 1978 in a Tamil family in Kerala, Vidya Balan’s father P.R. Balan is the Vice President of ETC Channel and mother is a homemaker. Vidya Balan’s family relocated to Mumbai when she was very young and she completed her entire education in Mumbai. Vidya attended St. Anthony's School in Chembur and earned her graduate degree in sociology from St. Xavier's College. Later she completed her Master’s Degree in sociology from the University of Mumbai.
Vidya Balan started her acting career in the south Indian cinema with a Malayalam film ‘Chakram’. She later signed in a couple of Tamil films, namely ‘Run’ and ‘Manasellam’. However neither of her Malayalam films got completed and she was replaced by another actress in the Tamil film on the grounds of a weak performance and lack of acting skills.
It was Vidya’s persistence that kept her going and she finally appeared in a number of print and TV commercials. Vidya Balan featured in around ninety TV commercials, mostly directed by the ace ad filmmaker Pardeep Sarkar. Vidya was also seen in popular music videos with singers like Pankaj Udhas, Shubha Mudgal and the band Euphoria. Vidya Balan later appeared in TV shows like Ekta Kapoor’s ‘Hum Paanch’ and Ashok Pandit's ‘Hanste Khelte’.
Vidya Balan signed Goutam Halder’s Bengali film, ‘Bhalo Theko’ in 2003; however the movie took a while to complete and was finally released in 2006. Vidya Balan received the Anandalok Puraskar for the best performance in a leading role. Vidya Balan was introduced to bollywood by Vidhu Vinod Chopra in family drama ‘Parineeta’. Vidya balan underwent forty screen tests and seventeen make-up shoots before she was finally selected for the leading role in ‘Parineeta’. Released in 2006, ‘Parineeta’ became a huge critical as well as commercial success.
Vidya Balan won the Filmfare Best Female Debut and was nominated for the Filmfare best actress award. Vidya Balan was then approached by the producer who dropped her in one of her previously signed Tamil films to cast her opposite Kamal Hassan in ‘Dasavathaaram’. Vidya politely refused the offer and the film was later signed by Asin.
Vidua Balan next starred opposite Sanjay dutt in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘Lago Raho Munnabhai’ directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Vidya’s performance was appreciated and the movie became the highest grossing film of the year. Vidya Balan worked with Mani Ratnam in 2007 release ‘Guru’ alongside Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. Once again the movie earned huge success and Vidya won accolades from the critics. Her next few films ‘Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love’, ‘Eklavya: The Royal Guard’ and ‘Kismet Konnection’ failed at the box office, though ‘Eklavya: The Royal Guard’ became India’s official entry to Oscars in 2007.
Vidya Balan gave phenomenal performances in 2007 hits ‘Heyy Babyy’ and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’. Vidya’s recent release was ABCL’s ‘Paa’ also featuring the veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. Vidya successfully played the character of a single parent to a progeric child played by Amitabh Bachchan. Directed by R. Balki, ‘Paa’ became a box office success and Vidya won the Best Actress Award at the Filmfare Awards and Star Screen Award ceremonies.
