Vinod Mehra was a notable Indian actor who started his career as a child artist and later appeared as the lead hero in several critically and commercially successful films like ‘Amar Prem’, ‘Ghar’, ‘Lal Patthar’, ‘Anuraag’, ‘Anurodh’ and ‘Swarag Narak’. Vinod Mehra created a distinct niche for himself defined by contemporary acting style that was pretty fresh as compared to the traditional heroes of seventies and eighties.
Vinod Mehra was born on 13 February 1945 in Amritsar, Punjab. Vinod Mehra married Meena Broca, however the marriage arranged by his mother could not succeed and he later remarried Bindiya Goswami. Bindiya Goswami was popular actress during seventies and eighties and starred in hit films like ‘Khatta Meetha’, ’Prem Vivah’, ‘Golmaal’ and ‘Shaan’. Soon the marriage also ended and Bindiya later married popular director J P Dutta who has directed superhit films like ‘Refugee’, ‘Border’, ‘LOC Kargil’ and ‘Umrao Jaan’.

It was rumored that Vinod Mehra secretly married his ‘Ghar’ co-star Rekha, but in an episode of ‘Rendezevous with Simi Grewal’, Rekha admitted that Vinod and she never got married and were just good friends. Vinod Mehra finally married Kiran and the two had a daughter soniya and son Rohan. Vinod Mehra suffered a fatal heart attack and died in the year 1990 at an age of forty five. Both his children were raised in Kenya, Soniya Mehra made her acting debut in the year 2007 in ‘Victoria No. 203’. The film was the remake of 1972 Bollywood hit of the same name. Directed by Anant Mahadevan, ‘Victoria No. 3’ also starred Om Puri, Anupam Kher, Jimmy Shergill, Johnny Lever, Preeti Jhangiani and Javed Jaffrey. After taking a sabbatical for three years, Soniya is expected to be seen in Navdeep Singh’s fortcoming film ‘Basra’ alongside Abhay Deol, Nikhil Dwivedi, Chitrangada Singh and Shahana Goswami.

Vinod Mehra started his career as a child artist by appearing in films like ‘Raagni’, ‘Bewaqoof’ and ‘Angulimaal’. His first film as a lead hero was ‘Ek Thi Rita’ opposite Tanuja based on the English play A Girl Called Rita'’. Vinod Mehra was next seen in Shakti Samanta’s ‘Amar Prem’ alongside Rajesh Khann and Sharmila Tagore, Sushil Majumdar’s ‘Lal Patthar’ alongside Raaj Kumar, Hema Malini, Rakhee, Shakti Samanta’s ‘Anuraag’ opposite Moushmi Chatterjee and ‘Anurodh’ alongside Rajesh Khanna and Simple Kapadia.

Vinod Mehra starred alongside an ensemble cast including Sunil Dutt, Feroz Khan, Kabir Bedi, Rekha, Reena Roy, Jeetendra, Mumtaz in Rajkumar Kohli’s ‘Nagin’. He again collaborated with Rajkumar Kohli in ‘Jaani Dushman’ also starring Sunil Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Rekha, Reena Roy, Neetu Singh, Bindiya Goswami and Jeetendra. Vinod Mehra won accolades for his performance opposite Rekha in Manik Chatterjee’s ‘Ghar’. He gave an outstanding performance in Dasari Narayana Rao’s ‘Swarag Narak’ also starring Sanjeev Kumar, Jeetendra, Moushumi Chatterjee, Tanuja and Shabana Azmi.
Vinod Mehra’s last film ‘Aurat Aurat Aurat’ directed by K. Vishwanath was released in 1996, six years after his death. Vinod Mehra’s first and the only venture as a director and producer could be released three years after his death. Titled ‘Gurudev’, the film starred Rishi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Sridevi, but could not be completed owing to Vinod Mehra’s death. The film was later directed by Raj Sippy and released in 1993.
