Vivek Oberoi is an acclaimed Indian actor best remembered for his pioneering performances in award winning films like ‘Company’, ‘Saathiya’, ‘Yuva’, ‘Omkara’ and ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’. Vivek Oberoi has received several awards including the coveted Filmfare award and IIFA award.
Vivek Oberoi was born on 3 September 1976 to actor Suresh Oberoi and homemaker Yashodhara Oberoi. He attended the Mayo College in Ajmer and later obtained his Masters Degree in film acting from New York University. Vivek Oberoi also attended several acting and film making workshops in London and New York.
Vivek Oberoi first faced the camera for Ram Gopal Verma’s ‘Company’ based on the organization of underworld in Mumbai. ‘Company’ starred Ajay Devgan, Manisha Koirala and Mohanlal in lead roles while Vivek Oberoi played a supporting character. ‘Company’ became a huge commercial and critical success and Vivek received the Best Male Debut Award at Filmfare, Star Screen, Zee Cine Awards, Bollywood Movie Awards and Stardust Awards. He also won the Filmfare Best supporting Actor Award for ‘Company’.
Vivek Oberoi was next seen in Yash raj Films’ superhit romantic drama ‘Saathiya’ opposite Rani Mukherji. Directed by Shaad Ali, ‘Saathiya’ won six Filmfare Awards, two IIFA Awards, four Zee cine Awards and many more. ‘Saathiya’ was the remake of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film ‘Alaipayuthey’.
Vivek Oberoi appeared in several average films like ‘Darna Mana Hai’, ‘Kyun Ho Gaya Na’, ‘Masti’, ‘Kisna’, ‘Pyare Mohan’, ‘Naksha’, ‘Fool n Final’ and ‘Kaal’ etc. However Vivek Oberoi earned immense appreciation for his acclaimed film ‘Yuva’ alongside Ajay Devgan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor and Esha Deol. Directed by ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam, ‘Yuva’ was the remake of his Tamil mega hit ‘Aayutha Ezhuthu’ starring Surya, Madhavan, Siddharth, Meera Jasmine, Trisha and Esha Deol. ‘Yuva’ won several awards and thus consolidated Vivek’s status in bollywood.
Vivek Oberoi received the Bollywood Movie Award - Best Supporting Actor for Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Omkara’, an Indian adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello. ‘Omkara’ also starred Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma. ‘Omkara’ was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and later at Cairo International Film Festival. The film won several awards including three National Awards and several Filmfare Awards, Star Screen Awards, Zee Cine Awards, IIFA Awards, Bollywood Movie Awards and GIFA Awards.
Vivek Oberoi’s breakthrough performance was seen in Apoorva Lakhia’s ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’, based on the true incidents of the 1991 gun battle between gangsters and Mumbai Police in the Lokhandwala complex. Vivek Oberoi played the protagonist in the film and received immense appreciation from the film fraternity as well as the critics. He also won the IIFA Best Villain Award and Stardust Standout Performance of the Year for ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala'.
Vivek Oberoi had to face a lot of umbrage after the controversial incident of Salman- Vivek rift owing to his relationship with Aishwarya Rai. It is assumed that Vivek Oberoi helped Aishwarya get over Salman Khan after their breakup post ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. Soon Vivek and Aishwarya started seeing each other; however Aishwarya never accepted it in public. The two also appeared together in Sameer Karnik’s ‘Kyun Ho Gaya Na’ remembered for their sultry kissing scene.
Vivek Oberoi stirred another controversy by claiming that Salman Khan called him around forty two times to abuse him and also threatened to kill him. This turned out to be his biggest mistake as he was soon dumped by Aishwarya Rai and the entire film fraternity criticized him for being utterly immature. However Aishwarya Rai later married Abhishek Bachchan who was a very good friend of Vivek Oberoi. Recently Vivek publicly apologized to Salman Khan and it is assumed that now all is well between the two actors.
Vivek was lately seen in Kooki Gulati’s ‘Prince’ and Rensil D'Silva’s ‘Kurbaan’. He is currently working on Ram Gopal Verma’s ‘Rakta Charitra’ and Selvaraghavan’s ‘7g Rainbow colony’.
