Block printing on sarees has been done from generations to generations. In India, block printing on sarees are mainly done on Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. There are two most famous type of block printing on sarees found in Rajasthan and Gujarat, the Bagru and Sanganeri. They are similar to each other and the only difference is the color of the background of the sari that they are applying the print on.
How do block printing on Sarees happen?
There are several techniques of block printing on sarees manually and direct block printing on sarees is the most popular. The cloth here is being bleached and with the use of a dye it is being colored. After which, the other colors are being applied on the clothes’ boarder, using a wooden block that is carved. This is done inside the boarders.
The block printing on sarees is quite a tedious process. The cloth is being bleached before applying printing on it. And what’s worst is it is six yards of pure cloth. Just imagine how tedious it is! Then, boarders are being made if one wants to have one. They are tied up and dyed. After doing the boarder, the cloth is spread across the space. There are pinned down so that it will not move. Then the color is applied using a block with the desired color on it. The motion is going rightwards.
The blocks being used in block printing on sarees are not just ordinary blocks. The blocks are shaped into different forms and designs are placed at the bottom of it. Most of the blocks are made from a wood called Teak. The designs on them are carved by craftsmen who have made this their specialty. Bunta is the name of the block used in block printing on sarees. These blocks have holes on it normally 2-3 so that the air could move freely when doing block printing on sarees. There is also a handle attached to it. To attain the proper texture and smoothness of the blocks used in block printing on sarees, they are detained in oil for a minimum of 10 days and a maximum of 15 days.
