The highly rich and decorative type of shuttle-woven fabric is called brocade. It is usually made up of silk of different colors. Some time threads of gold or silver is also used along with it. Word “broccoli” is the origin of word brocade which means “embossed cloth”. Brocades are usually manufactured in china. There are different types of brocades. Some of them are mentioned as below.
Cloud brocade
As it is obvious from the name, cloud brocades represent the clouds. To produce these types of brocades artisans with skills are required. And high quality silk is used in manufacturing cloud brocades. Cloud brocades were used for imperial clothing in past time.
Dai brocade
It is produced by Dai minority. Two common materials are used in manufacturing of Dai brocades. One is cotton and other is silk. Sometime undyed cotton is used in creation of these brocades. But if some specific color is wanted then first silk is dyed in desired color and then it is used to create brocades.
Dong brocade
It is manufactured by dong minority. Like Dai brocades, silk and cotton both can be used for the creation of dong brocades. Or sometimes the mixture of cotton and silk can also be used depending upon the requirement. There are different patterns in dong brocades. Flora and Chinese characters are some of distinguished patterns. These types of brocades are used in making children garments or scarves.
Lu brocade
It is usually produced by the artisans of north and south of a province called Shandong. Its most important feature is bright colors. It has also strong textures. And with the passage of time it has become the need of living age.
Li brocade
The minority that live on Hainan Island are called li minority and brocades manufactured by this minority is called li brocades. Women skirts and bags are made from these brocades. The other names of these brocades are “li-cloth” and “li-curtain”.
Miao brocade
This type is important in Guizhou province, and it is manufactured by Miao minority. It is used to enhance the beauty of collars and sleeves of women garments. It is an important type, as it is also used for decoration purposes as well.
Sichuan brocade
It was firstly produced in Sichuan province. With the passage of time Sichuan brocades became the tradition silk brocades. It has a wide range of patterns, designs and colors.
Yao brocade
It is mostly used by Yao community in form of dowry on the marriage ceremonies of young girls. Flora, fauna and geometry are considered to be the main patterns of Yao brocades. All types of brocades are not suitable for marriage ceremonies only Yao brocades are considered special for wedding ceremonies. Different emotions can be represented by different brocades.
The other types of brocades include Suzhou brocades and zhuang brocades. The brocades represent traditions and culture of different minorities that belong to different provinces of china. Each minority has its own culture related to brocades and that has become their traditional symbol also.
