Current Trends in Evening Gowns
The current trend in evening gowns is moving away from tight-fitting dresses to longer, more flowing garments. Rather than being strapless, sheer, long sleeve gowns are becoming more popular. Dresses may be ankle length, or contain flowing material that reaches to the ground. Details such as embroidery or satin trim are common as well. The newest styles of evening gown makes it possible for women to look sexy without showing a great deal of skin. As such, buying a dress is no longer something that many women dread.
Petite women face a few additional challenges when buying an evening gowns. Long evening gowns with lace or other details around the hem may not be appropriate, since they could easily be removed through hemming. If you are 5’4” or under, you should look for dresses with long, thin vertical lines to help elongate you. Avoid dresses that add bulk, such as those with multiple layers of fabric or very thick, bunchy material. Dresses should come to the top of the feet if possible, but should not flare out at the bottom. Dresses that are all one color from top to bottom are preferred because they will prevent the eye from being broken up and make you appear taller.
Plus Size Gowns
Elegant plus-size gowns are becoming easier to find, thanks to designers in the USA and UK recognizing that not all women are pencil thin. The type of gown you choose will largely depend on which problem areas you are trying to hide. If you have a pear shape, choose a gown with a flattering neckline that also emphasizes your shoulders. An empire waistline, which is one that is somewhat higher than normal, is very flattering, and will help hide a number of figure flaws. Loose fitting fabric around the hips and legs will also help visually slim you.
Dresses for Older Women
You are never too old to enjoy wearing a formal evening gown; however, the style of dress you choose may change with age. Many older women find that dresses in vibrant colors no longer suit them, and instead elect to buy gowns that are various shades of beige, teal or cream. Formal dresses with cinched waists and padded shoulders may also be preferred because they help give the illusion of curves. Older women can still wear short dresses if they prefer, but should generally avoid ones that are extremely tight fitting.
Choosing a Color
Not only are evening gowns available in more styles than ever, but they are also found in nearly any color imaginable. Designer dresses can be bold, vivid shades of orange, pink or fuchsia, or milder pastel shades of baby blue, mint green, and pale yellow. The right color of dress will largely depend on the occasion you are buying it for. If you plan on entering a beauty pageant, a neon pink or green might be ideal. For more classic settings, a misty blue gown would be better. If there’s a chance you may wear your gown more than once, choose a black dress. Black can be dressed up or down with the right accessories, and works well in almost any occasion.
