The Indian kurta is a traditional shirt worn by men across India and Pakistan. The traditional Indian kurta is worn either just below or just above the knee, and is often paired with a pair of pajama-style pants, referred to as churidar. Kurtas are loose fitting in the arms, across the chest and around the hemline, offering a comfortable, airy and lightweight shirt for everyday wear.
Churidar pants are worn by both men and women, and are designed to complement the Indian kurta. These pants fit loosely above the knees, but taper to a tight fit around the ankles. This provides the legs a wide range of movement, and when combined with a longer kurta, the tapered ankle fit creates a distinctive look for the overall ensemble.
Today, the kurta has been influenced by a number of Western styles and traditions. Traditionally, kurtas have an embroidered stand collar, with a unique cutout neckline. Today they are available with a Western-inspired button-down collar. In-line with a more modern appearance, kurtas are often cut shorter than the original form, sitting just above or below the waistline.
Look for kurtas made from cotton, linen and other lightweight, breathable fabrics. Kurtas made of lightweight fabrics are ideal paired with jeans on a hot day. By adding features such as rich embroidery work, gold and silver threading and other fine embellishments, a kurta can become a stylish, formal piece of clothing for any dress-up occasion.
