Indian Sari

The Indian sari is worn in many styles, each reflecting a distinctive characteristic of the region of India where it was made. Today, many saris are manufactured by larger textile companies, and no longer bear the regional signatures of a handmade Indian sari. We at Kaneesha can help you find unique saris to fit your lifestyle, including luxurious silk saris that continue the legacy of the traditional Indian sari designs.

For everyday wear, choose cotton saris for their durability and easy maintenance. A luxurious silk sari may be most appropriate for special occasions, as they are much more difficult to care for. They are also more vulnerable to sustaining damage due to wear, such as stains and tears.

Draping a sari may at first be a challenge, but with practice, it becomes easier. Start by tucking the inner end-piece, the Kanhai Patti, into your petticoat, right below your navel. Turning the fabric from right to left, wrap it once around your waist, and let the hem fall evenly to the floor. From your navel position, begin creating 5-inch deep pleats by holding the fabric between the forefinger of your right hand and your thumb and pinkie, leaving the left hand to help guide the sari into shape. Tuck the pleats just to the left of your navel, turning the pleats to the left.

Petticoats worn beneath the sari are normally made of pure cotton for added comfort. An embroidered petticoat looks great beneath a sheer sari, as the color and stitching on the undergarment can be used to bring out the alluring appeal of even a very simple sari.
