Lisa Ray is a model turned actress of Canadian origin who has appeared in a few Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. Lisa Ray was born on 4th April, 1972 to an Indian father and a Polish mother in Toronto, Canada. She was raised in the suburb of Etobicoke, Toronto and attended Etobicoke Collegiate Institute, Richview Collegiate Institute and Silverthorn Collegiate Institute. Lisa Ray lives with her longtime partner Paolo Zambaldi, an Italian fashion photographer.

Lisa Ray was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare cancer of plsma cells that produce anti bodies. However after undergoing a stem cell treatment, she announced that she was cancer free in April 2010. Lisa Ray will feature in UniGlobe Entertainment's ‘1 a Minute’, a cancer docu-drama made by Namrata Singh Gujral. The short film will also star other celebrities who are proud survivors of cancer including Olivia Newton-John, Namrata Singh Gujral, Diahann Carroll, Melissa Etheridge, Mumtaz , Jaclyn Smith ,William Baldwin, Daniel Baldwin Priya Dutt, Barbara Mori, Deepak Chopra and Morgan Brittany.
Lisa Ray aspired to pursue a journalism degree but due to her busy schedule in the fashion world, she had to give up her dream of becoming a journalist. Lisa Ray first appeared in a Bombay Dyeing advert donning a black swimsuit alongside Karan Kapoor. She was approached by the magazine Gladrags and she landed on their cover page clad in a Baywatch style red swimsuit. Lisa caught the attention of fashion fraternity and became the cover girl of several magazines. She became the only model to be named in the list of Top Ten most Beautiful Indian Woman of the Millennium by the daily Times of India. Soon Lisa became the host of her own show-business program and the brand ambassador of many brands including the cosmetic giant Lakme. Lisa also appeared in Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s popular music video ‘Afreen’ in the year 1996.
Lisa Ray made her acting debut in the Tamil film ‘Nethaji’ opposite Sarath Kumar released in 1994. Later she was seen playing the female lead opposite Mahesh Babu in the Telugu film ‘Takkari Donga’. The film won five Nandi awards including best actor, best child actor, best cinematography, best audiography and best action.
Lisa was flooded with Bollywood offers but did not find any suitable role to begin her bollywood innings. Finally she accepted to play the female lead opposite Aftab Shivdasani in Vikram Bhatt’s ‘Kasoor’. Produced by Mahesh Bhatt, ‘Kasoor’ was inspired from the 1985 Hollywood thriller ‘Jagged Edge’. Lisa Ray was next seen in acclaimed director Deepa Mehta’s romantic Indian-Canadian film ‘Bollywood/Hollywood’ opposite Rahul Khanna. The film won two awards at the 23rd Genie Awards including Best Motion Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
Deepa Mehta again collaborated with Lisa Ray in the Oscar nominated 2005 film ‘Water’. Also starring Seema Biswas, John Abraham, Sarala Kariyawasam, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Waheeda Rehman, Raghuvir Yadav and Vinay Pathak, ‘Water ’ was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, 2005.
‘Water won 3 Genie awards, Golden Kinnaree Award at Bangkok International Film Festival for Best Film and The Silver Mirror Award at Festival Films from the South in Oslo in 2006. ‘Water’ was nominated at the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Foreign Language Film and National Board of Review (NBR) Award for Freedom of Expression.
Lisa Ray was seen in a number of international productions including Shamim Sarif’s ‘I Can't Think Straight’ and ‘The World Unseen’, ‘Toronto Stories’ premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Peter Stebbings’ ‘Defendor’, among others. Lisa Ray will soon be seen in ‘Let the Game Begin’, ’Trader Games’ and ‘1 a minute’.
